Nobu-Trained Chef to Open His First Restaurant in Mira Mesa
Reviews
This place is ideal for lunch if you don’t want to wait, want to eat something good, but don’t want to spend half your day doing it. It’s located in Mira Mesa, with easy parking and convenient access.
The chef, Changjin Oh, has an impressive background. He previously worked at multiple Nobu locations and was also involved in the opening of Nobu Del Coronado. Now with his own place, his goal is to bring high-quality sushi to people in a more casual, everyday way.
What to order:
• Omakase Sushi Box / Nigiri Set — thoughtfully curated, super fresh, consistently solid, and ready to eat
• Japanese Sando sandwiches — ultra-soft milk bread with creative fillings (like tempura shrimp with gochujang), flavorful and memorable
• Each order also comes with a complimentary bowl of miso soup
One more thing that really stood out: the cashier was extremely friendly. From the moment you walk in, they greet you, chat with you, explain the menu, and thank you — with a high-pitched, energetic tone that totally makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a Japanese supermarket .
Price-wise, it’s on the mid-to-higher end, but that reflects the quality of the ingredients. Overall, this isn’t a traditional sit-down omakase — it feels more like a premium Japanese convenience-style spot, offering high-quality sushi and creative Japanese sandwiches in an elevated bento-box format.
The sando was great, and the omakase-style nigiri really stood out — each piece was well-balanced and flavorful. Overall, you can feel the care and experience behind the food.
Definitely recommend if you’re looking for quality sushi done right.
Arriving at noon, I was left with two options: a small 5 piece maki roll for $32, or a tuna ‘chirashi’ shown in the attached photo for $38, i got the tuna and it definitely did not fill me up. Maki comes out to $6 per bite.
Line was 42 minutes long when arriving at noon, needless to say no one who stood in line had anything positive to say about wanting to come back.
More about the line – they choose to have this for both the feeling of exclusivity and popularity, and also to give them time to make more dishes since they clearly have not figured out their demand yet.
As you check out, the woman announces in a loud voice everything that the person is getting. One item? She must announce the wasabi, the house made soy sauce, the miso soup, the chopsticks. It’s obnoxious and intentional to keep the line super long and slow for the above reasons. If they had the to-go bags ready for each customer the checkout would go from 90+ seconds to 30 seconds. But maybe they think we want the spectacle of announcing everything and waiting in line? We don’t, we want to get our food and get back to work. (They’re only open weekdays)
Quality of fish was great. Was it $38 for takeout after waiting almost 45 min – great? No, not close.
I won’t be coming back anytime soon but if they’ve figured their stuff out in 6 months I might head back to see more options. If your customers arrive at noon for a takeout spot, and after 45 min wait they have two options, they’re not going to come back. Lastly, as you check out they ask for a tip on your nearly $40 single item. After the wait, lack of options, and overpriced food, the tip request is not a good look.
I gave 3 stars with the hope they will take some advice because I do hope they figure it out.
