The food was pretty good. Some of the signs one the wall were pretty funny too. It was a little pricy though. My meal (picture below) was 15 dollars.

On Oahu, we aren’t blessed with many options for good old BBQ. Thankfully, Molly’s Smokehouse was able to hit the spot. The smoker sits right in front of the store and parking can be somewhat scarce. We couldn’t help but notice some of the patrons parking at Jack In The Box, then walking over. Stepping inside, there isn’t much to see. I’ve seen L&Ls with more decorations on the wall, but we were instantly hit with a nice smokey aroma. The food is good by Hawaii standards but the game will have to step up if it’s expected to stand up to the mainland counterparts. I will definitely come back again. I recommend the Chicken Fried Steak along with the coleslaw as a side. The coleslaw here is the best I have ever tasted! Wash it all down with a glass of sweet tea, or if you’re like me, have them mix in some lemonade in your tea. Just a side note, it does tend to get busy during lunchtime and they do seem to be understaffed.

There’s not much customer parking, so we parked across the street. The decor is a little strange, but homey. Plenty of seating, we didn’t have to wait. Service was inconsistent, but there was only one person, and he seemed to be working as a host, server, and cook.
The food took awhile to come out. Fried chicken was really greasy, creating a soggy, super-salty crust. Brisket had a nice smokiness, but the fat wasn’t rendered out, so there were big gobs to work around. Ribs and sauce were good, but nothing to write home about. Green beans were overcooked. Baked beans, cornbread, and mac-n-cheese were tasty, but nothing special. Coleslaw had a lot of onion flavor.

I loved it here. The food is great, especially if you’re homesick for something southern. It was so nice to be able to order sweet tea, especially sweet tea that isn’t made from some sort of mix or syrup. Blech.
I had the pulled pork and a slice of pecan pie and it made my day.
Also, the gentleman who works the front of house was awesome. He was so friendly, and he made me feel comfortable to be out with my toddler which not all places do. It’s easy to feel kind of guilty when you’re out with a little one because no matter what you do it’s kind of a flip of the coin whether or not the little one will behave. Luckily, he did, but it still felt nice to be in such a family friendly environment.
The only downsides to this place is the parking which seems to be a bit of a disappointment everywhere – I parked on the street on California Ave – and the pricing. It’s kind of expected if you’ve adjusted to island prices, but if you’re new or compare it to back home then you’ll be a bit bummed. It seemed well worth it to me, though, and I’ll be going back.

Okay, I just tried the catfish bites (really tasty & a good idea). I also had the baby back ribs (another good choice, really flavorful and tender). I think if they keep serving tasty meals and get more smiles on the servers faces they will soon be able to redecorate. Go for the food. I like it!
Update (5/30/18) Sad to say that they are out of business! Shouldn’t have happened.

Service crews were polite and nice. I gave them 5 star. But our experience here about the food and presentation is really below the standard. Don’t put anything in your menu that you don’t have. First impression when we came in is just the same after we order and ate. I don’t mind paying much on food if it is good but not this one. This is just my family’s experience, no intention to influence other customers. Absolutely will not come back and cannot recommend. My kids are blaming me for not going to Zippy’s.

I love love this place! Their beef Brisket and fried catfish are amazing. My aunt said the bbq Chicken was the best she’s ever had. And their southern sweet tea tastes like “home” in a glass. I’m originally from Oklahoma, but having lived in Hawaii for the past 15 years, I was overjoyed to find this restaurant. This is now my go to place for good southern food. Reminds me of grandma’s home cookin’. Can’t recommend it enough!

Edit;m: I was mistaken, there has been no change of owners, the guy I believed to be the owner was just a manager of some sort. Same ownership, but at the time of writing they’re definitely going through a rough patch as far as their lower employees. I’ve popped in a couple times to give them another chance and had a similar experience.
I believe this place has changed owners. Used to be a fantastic place to get a taste of home, but things seem to have gone downhill. Unprofessional staff (the old owner was a bit unorthodox but with had best southern manners), only one menu for a table, many things unavailable and food that simply tastes bad. For example, fried okra used to be very good with a light batter coating, now is a dark chunk of breading with a chunky veggie core. Everything just seems to be made without care now. A real shame, now on the lookout for another place to fill the niche.

Just ate here this evening. Were originally from the south and my husband and I both loved it. The bbq sauce was delicious. He had the brisket and rib combo with cowboy beans and fries. I had the brisket sandwich with Mac and cheese and fries. They were out of collard greens this evening. We got pecan pie and peach cobbler to go. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful. We will definitely be back!
