Reviews
I also wanted to mention something regarding a review left by someone else. I was actually in the restaurant when that situation happened. From what I saw, he never politely asked about the issue. He never addressed the situation himself. His date started being passive aggressive, almost demanding thier money back, and arguing with staff instead of calmly explaining the situation. So I’m honestly not sure what he was talking about in his review because what I witnessed felt very different from how he described it.
We went for “build your own” bowl.
The ingredients were fresh, portion was pretty big and the staff was nice and friendly.
Price range is on the higher side for my opinion for the poke bowl but it is what it is:)
Overall, nice place with good food!
I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience deserves an honest, detailed account. My date and I visited Moku Bowls Friday around 2:30 PM expecting a decent meal. What we received fell far below basic standards for food quality, quality control, and customer service.
We ordered two bowls and an $8 mango smoothie. Every item was a problem.
Food quality and safety concerns
1) The Moanna bowl (genuine dental risk):
My date ordered the Moanna bowl, and the rice was hard, crunchy, stale, and old — not “slightly dry,” not “a little overdone.” It was so hard that I legitimately thought she could chip a tooth eating it. I took a bite myself and had the same thought. Rice should never be served with that level of hardness. It tasted like it had been overcooked, left sitting out for hours, and then scraped from the bottom of a pot to serve. That’s not just poor preparation — it’s a basic quality-control failure, and it’s the kind of thing I would not feel comfortable serving to anyone, especially children or older adults.
2) The pork dumpling soup bowl (freshness and food-handling concerns):
My pork dumpling soup bowl raised a different kind of concern. The dumplings tasted bad, and the soup went cold almost immediately. The vegetables (onions, cabbage, mushrooms) were dried out and stale, like “freeze-dried” ingredients that were expected to rehydrate in the broth. They didn’t. The texture was unpleasant and the overall bowl felt careless — and when ingredients come across that stale and dried, it naturally makes you question freshness and handling.
The smoothie
Hoping the smoothie might salvage the visit, I ordered an $8 mango smoothie. It was awful. I tasted it, then had my date taste it as well to confirm — also awful.
The service (where this turned from bad to appalling)
We did what normal customers do: we walked up politely, explained that the smoothie tasted bad, and asked if there was any possibility of a refund or adjustment.
Instead of handling the situation professionally, the woman at the counter became defensive and told us they only use frozen mango and coconut milk, implying that if it tasted bad, that was simply how it is. Regardless of the explanation, it was not good — and at that price point, it’s reasonable to expect something better than a poorly balanced blend with no real flavor/texture.
The interaction got worse when we calmly asked if there was any way to get our money back for the smoothie. In response, she gave us a very unprofessional, standoffish glare — the kind of look that makes it clear you’re being treated like a problem for even asking. Immediately after that, she said:
“Why would you say that to someone who just made your food?”
That comment sums up the issue. This is not someone cooking a personal meal in their home. This is a business transaction. We were calm, respectful, and matter-of-fact. Customers should not be treated like they’ve done something wrong for giving straightforward feedback about a product they paid for.
When we asked if there was anything they could do, the woman behind the counter said, “Well, I guess I can get my manager,” then proceeded to do nothing — no manager, no solution, no attempt to make it right. Instead, we were met with a prolonged, passive-aggressive stare until we finally walked away.
Bottom line
This wasn’t a matter of preference. It was:
A bowl with rice so hard it felt like a real risk to your teeth
A soup bowl with stale, dried-out ingredients that raised basic freshness/handling concerns
An $8 smoothie that was undrinkable
Hostile, unprofessional service when we made a polite and reasonable request
At this point, I’m not comfortable calling what we received “food service” at all based on what we were served. I cannot recommend this place. I would not bring children here, and I would strongly caution older adults or anyone who cares about basic food quality and professionalism. If something is wrong, do not expect a reasonable resolution.
