The Modern Cafe is a woman owned/family owned, small business, that has been around since 1933. After suffering from a neighboring fire in 2009, the Modern Cafe was rebuilt and redesigned as a local craft beer and cocktail bar in the Allegheny West neighborhood of North Side, Pittsburgh. We have won numerous awards on our sandwiches and we make homemade soups during the Fall and Winter. We are dedicated to working with local breweries, distilleries and food vendors to help create the best experience for our customers while continuing to support local.

Great no nonsense place to get drinks and some really great sandwiches, at a reasonable price too! Their sandwiches all looked amazing, with their egg sandwich with mozzarella sticks being unholy and delicious. Sadly they don’t come with fries, but I absolutely think they’re worth getting as a side, they were the best kind of classic crinkle cut, love it!

This place has some history to it. The music was a great playlist full of 80’s tunes when we were there. The volume was just right and not too loud.
We were served right away. I really liked the Gyro salad and pita chips.
They have some great beers on offer as well as liquor. I saw one of the coolest beer taps there I have seen in a while too!

Stopped in here for a coffee and the woman working offered to brew it fresh for me which was very nice of her to do, and not only did it taste good when it came out but it was relatively cheap too. On top of all that, she even offered to give me one to go and I walked away with a large coffee to take home with me for free. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

Beer and alcohol selection is fantastic! Their chili dog is amazing! The food is priced well and the portions are large. Its on western ave/blvd 2 long blocks from the bookstore at ccac. Its my go to when i get out of class at noon.

Popped in here for a quick lunch. Service was fairly quick. I had the Modern Dog which was tasty. My friend got the burger and we shared the onion rings, which were super good. Menu is reasonably priced.

EXCELLENT!! Truly a hidden gem on the North Side. Hit this place up and we were happy we did. Service was quick and friendly (even though we weren’t in a hurry), good prices, great food. I got the gyro sub and my friend got the club sub – we shared a side of fries. No complaints from either one of us. We learned the current owner is the third person to own the restaurant. Definitely hit this place up.

The Modern Cafe may not be much to look at on the outside, but the bar/lounge area inside is very nice and the staff is friendly and personable. I had The Spartan, a sandwich that apparently won a contest some years back. It was delicious, and as the bartender said, it was a massive sandwich! I believe his exact words were “the only thing you need after that sandwich is a nap!” He was right…

The female bartender working lunch yesterday has a serious attitude problem and was very rude. She was throwing menus and acting like a child because me and my employee went in the room where the food is prepared and placed our order there. It was our first time here and it looked like a dining area where you could place an order and the guy cooking the food who was really nice took our order. If the bartender does not want people going in that room and placing an order, maybe you should put a sign up or a door. But to treat first time guest to your restaurant that rude is unacceptable.
