Bar & Kitchen open everyday from 4-9pm! This winter, the Modern is leaning into a new kind of Slack Season. The bar stays open with a focused drinks menu, the space stays available for rendezvous and gatherings. If you’ve spent any time in Boise you know what happens after the holidays. The pace changes. The city exhales. Calendars loosen up. The cold settles in. And restaurants feel that post New Year dip. So this year, The Modern is leaning into it. Starting January 1, 2026, we’re officially entering Slack Season—AKA our winter reset where we scale things down, get cozy, and make room to refresh what we do best.

We went for cocktails/mocktails & dessert & also ended up getting the “bread & butter” as it sounded so good. The drinks were delish. They perfectly balanced both the old fashioned & the no more bad mornings mocktail. We’d both order them again easily. The bread & butter was so so good (the pickled onions & homemade pickles are just as good as the bread!). We also tried the chai spice cake & it was so delicious as well. It was our first time going although I’ve heard a lot about it over the years. It was a really cool retro vibe & felt so calm & relaxing somehow. The servers were also so amazing. We’ll definitely be back.

We always have the most wonderful experience at the Modern! The staff are truly beautiful. They care about the finest details. Our server cleaned our table between courses and gave us fresh linen and utensils. This was all done not in a pretentious way, but in such a loving manner. I can’t even fully explain it. It is truly something you just HAVE to experience. The food is superb and affordable. The atmosphere is delightful as local artists adorn the walls. Thank you, Modern, for embracing simple pleasures.

A great chic little local spot on the ground floor of a hotel. They serve great food and drinks and are constantly changing the menu. The menu selection is a little small but they do have some different sections of the menu to choose from, apps, soups and salads, entrees and desserts, just only around 4 options in each category. Everything I have ever had here has been great, it’s just a little pricey if you want to try lots of different things.

Classic, groovy, and the best company! Amazing staff who went above and beyond. The hotel is updated, clean, and in a perfect spot of downtown. Walking distance to so many things. They also offer bikes at no charge to the guests.
Make sure to visit the bar… Amaro makes the perfect slightly dirty martini.
For being downtown, it’s still quiet and very comfortable.
Highly recommend. Great local feel. Retro vibes. Amazing staff. Great, I mean great, food.

Absolutely outstanding experience at The Modern Bar! Our server (Ngen) was so attentive and her timing was immaculate. She started by telling us their drink special for the evening, as well as the soup of the day, while answering all of our questions and adding recommendations. Extremely knowledgeable and kind!
Starting with our cocktails, we were blown away. Very refreshing and delicious. The charred asparagus salad was unique and tasty in every way. Our second round of drinks were different than what my partner or I might usually order and were both, again, thoroughly pleased. For entrees we shared the HALIBUT and oh my goodness!!! So eloquently prepared and displayed- wrapped in a perfectly cooked leafy green, every so tightly that it held its shape and maintained its moisture content. Could not have been more perfectly cooked. The GNOCCHI was also some of the most perfectly cooked that I have ever experienced. Chef Jade came out, upon our request, to explain to us how the halibut is prepared and was very informative and nice!
I don’t want to be the longest review ever written, but I have nothing but good things to say about this place, their food, and their staff! 10/10 would recommend!

The amazing Modern Bar wizards will make you a magic potion that perfectly balances sweet and tart. This aesthetically pleasing bar is a hipper cooler version of a hopper painting. These artisans of alcohol and jigger make the Motel a must see for those who want a perfect Banana Bully or non-alcoholic cocktail with their homemade herb infused NA gin.

The Modern has changed up their food program and they no longer serve dinner. We made a meal out of their small plates, but we were sorry we had not known in advance that they have made a significant change to their menu. Service was flawless and friendly and the drinks were fantastic.

Food is absolutely delicious, with a rich mix of textures and flavors, drinks were equally great although I do wish there had been some pairings offered with the specific dishes! The staff we interacted with was very nice, I do wish the room was bigger for more quiet dining, but didn’t take away from how incredibly good the food is!

Those guys are like family to us, we ere super excited every time we stop by and try their new dishes, the Chef is super friendly and his creativity is very unique. HEADS-UP GUYS!! if you like bland food, this place is not for you,… if you like confort food: forget about it!!! This place is for people who love experience different flavors and textures, small amount of an explosive flavored dishes,… if you are expecting to be served like the Black Bear Dinner, please keep your self on the redneck side. …If you like casual dinning with a piece of art plate and fabulous desserts and hand crafted luxury drinks, this is your place.
