If I’m rating this restaurant strictly on the food, taste, presentation, it’s 100% a 5 star restaurant! But, it can be a little pricey, and the service is pretty slow. I feel that the restaurant, as well as Brandon’s and the bar (where you can also order your sushi), is all understaffed. When we arrived at the bar at 3:30 there was one lady working behind the bar, and she was also running to the restaurant (Brandon’s) to wait on people! So it’s difficult to give people much attention when you’re stretched so thin.
We came back after 7 to have dinner. They don’t open until 5pm.
I ordered the shrimp “handy”. It’s tempura shrimp wrapped in white rice paper, with rice and avocado. It was delicious!!! I was going to share with my hubby but it was so good! Sorry honey!
My husband had the miso soup. It had A LOT of green onions in it. I like that, but he didn’t.
Then we shared the sashimi platter. It’s 20 pieces of sashimi with a roll (wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber). It was the perfect amount for 2 people to share. We were both full afterwards. Every piece was perfect. It had 4 pieces of tuna, 4 of salmon, yellowtail, and wahoo.
I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, my husband had a Moscow mule. They were both excellent. Then we had the salted caramel gelato for dessert.
A 20% gratuity is automatically included. Our bill was $180 altogether.
Upon looking at them menu we were excited that they had quite an extensive sushi menu which pleasantly surprised us. One thing we did notice while walking past the sushi bar was the Itamae was extremely young ( mid/early 20s). My boyfriend mentioned this was a red flag being that any skilled sushi chef should have around 5-10 years experience under their belt before practicing the art of sushi preparation. But I digress.
We proceeded to place our order: salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, yellow tail nigiri and a spicy tuna roll. We did request the tuna toro but they were out, which lead the waitress to suggest uni…we both found this to be a strange suggestion in place of tuna toro.
When the sushi arrived we noticed the nigiri was prepared extremely poorly. The slices of fish were way too thick and too long for the bed of rice they sat upon. The salmon was tough, chewy and not of good quality. The tuna was mediocre at best. Neither of us tried the yellowtail as it had a very peculiar smell. The spicy tuna roll came wrapped in rice paper hand roll style which we weren’t expecting—this also was not detailed on the menu.
We ordered around 6 pieces of nigiri and only ate 2.5 of them before we decided to leave. It took around 10 mins for us to get the check because our waitress was divulging in long conversations with other guests. There’s nothing wrong with that but being that I waitressed in the past I know you’re suppose to give equal attention to all guests. We eventually flagged down another member from the staff who brought us our check and cashed us out.
Now here’s the best part: I teased my boyfriend about us getting food poisoning, he said “no way we’ll be fine”. Here we both are the following morning with awful stomach pain and practically unable to venture too far from the restroom. Use your imagination.
Unfortunately I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially their sushi selection. Dine at your own risk.
