What was not okay is when the cook was placing food on our plates, he was touching every plate with the spatula that he was cooking with when everyone was already eating and we were sitting with strangers. Cooks need another spatula to push food off onto plate so they are not hitting it to release the food.
We ended up here again and atmosphere remains the same. The hostesses appear to dislike their job; forget being greeted as you walk in since playing on phones would be more important.
We asked to be seated at the Hibachi section but ended up moving to the bar since the hostess didn’t inform us the wait could be more than 15 minutes and we were the first group to arrive and they’ll have to wait to fill the table. Not that difficult to be informative.
The Sushi chef’s are a joke, mediocre at best. We ordered Sashimi and the slices were butchered! Slice of fish and plating is done with care and very important in Japanese cuisine.
I didn’t see a single Japanese personnel in this establishment which is concerning and it reflects on how it’s run and preparation of food. And I swear I heard a karaoke! which isn’t really a norm for this type of space.
Unfortunately, this is the only Japanese restaurant that’s ranked high, but our experience is below subpar.
– Initial Review –
Came in at dinner time and while the Hibachi side was a 45 minute wait, we were able to sit in the Sushi section right away.
Service was good, our server and sushi chef were attentive. The food (sushi and hibachi) was subpar for the following reasons:
– seafood freshness was questionable (the yellowtail & salmon had an odd taste), the octopus was chewy (my wife had to spit it out)
– the baked oysters were not good, the tomato sauce was overwhelming (and it doesn’t even taste good) and the top was charred/burnt
– ginger was dry and tasted like a paper
– the hibachi was bland, had two slices of mushroom.. no onions or zucchini :/?
I’m nitpicking since I’ve traveled to Japan multiple times and Japanese prepare their sushi with intricate attention and respect of the food, our chef was throwing the fish blocks back into their trays. The sashimi/nigiri slices were unproportioned :/… just displeased with what we observed.
Quite frankly, Wegman’s grocery store bought sashimi/nigiri tasted better.
Finally, this place could use some good scrubbing and sweep. The waiting/lounge area on the Sushi section was filthy (trash everywhere).
We chose to sit on the sushi bar side because the main dining room had a wait of over an hour and a half. Unfortunately, the service was absolutely terrible. Everything was painfully slow and completely unorganized.
It took 20 minutes just to get our drinks, and there were no refills offered at all. Our soup and salad arrived after our meals, which makes no sense. Appetizers came less than a minute before one of the five entrées hit the table, so there was no opportunity to enjoy them as appetizers. Requests we made were either forgotten or took an unreasonable amount of time to come back to the table.
Overall, the service was inattentive, unresponsive, and chaotic.
We spoke with a manager and clearly explained that this was the worst experience we’ve ever had here. The response was a 20% discount, which felt dismissive considering how poorly the entire evening was handled.
This visit was extremely disappointing and not at all what we’ve come to expect. Based on tonight, I would not recommend dining here unless major improvements are made to service and organization.
