The Chilaquiles Benedict was our favourite. Featuring beef barbacoa on salsa roja drenched totopos with poached eggs, pico & hollandaise it was innovative and full of flavour.
The breakfast taco trio comes with three different tacos; scrambled egg & chorizo, fried egg with jack cheese & potato rosti, and lamb barbacoa. The tacos were delicious and I loved the concept of breakfast tacos.
If you feel like something on the sweeter side I highly recommend the choc chip pancakes. It was sweet without being overly sweet. Whilst if you prefer the açai bowl you can’t go wrong with adding peanut butter.
I really enjoyed the horchata. It was my first time trying this rice milk drink and I loved the vanilla and cinnamon flavour.
– a touch indifferent to begin with in that after seating outside and being given the bottle of water and glasses, I think they forgot about us. At about 17 minutes past our booking time (we arrived slightly early) I went inside to order; but was told that someone would right out – which after a couple more minutes, they were.
After that, no issues.
I will note that the tables are *extremely* close together in places; you’re basically eating with the people next to you.
Food
Hard to mark accurately. Certainly nothing *wrong* with it, just a bit lacking. 3.5 is probably more accurate.
Eaten:
– Queso Nachos
– Salsa Flight (a quartet of salsas served in small bowls)
– Barbacoa Burrito
– Grilled Chicken Burrito bowl
As a general statement, I’d say this meal would have been far poorer if not for the presence of the salsas on the side, and I’m kinda marking from that perspective. (Additionally, I’m not sure how exactly they expect people to use those salsas.) In general, the flavours were a bit one-note… a bit of a tang, but not much else.
The Habanero and Macha were the rescuers of the meal, providing punch and flavour.
The nachos were pretty generous in terms of the toppings – possibly too much crema because the bottom of the bowl was a b it of a soggy mess. It probably needs a little less of that… or maybe a few more chips to balance it out. Personal preference though. Tasty enough, but the lack of actual cheese does subtract a bit.
The Barbacoa burrito was pretty good. Nice and hot when delivered with some nicely crispy fried cheese and well-cooked. Sizing is okay… maybe a little smaller than you may expect for the price. Maybe.
However the grilled chicken burrito bowl was found to be lacking. The chicken was kinda solid/rubbery and without any significant flavour. A nice tang from the salsa verde, but that’s about it.
So, as an overall, it’s hard to give it more than a 3.
Certainly a decent place to eat, but not screaming out for a re-visit.
Would definitely recommend to anyone craving some tacos or a burrito bowl! Special mention to the fried chicken as well – great flavour

Mission District is a California-inspired Mexican restaurant located on Glen Eira Road, Ripponlea. It is owned by a husband and wife duo and who wanted to bring the cuisine to the neighbourhood. Almost everything is made in house!
There is a great selection of cocktails, especially if you love a Margarita like me. Both the Pineapple and Lychee Margs were delicious, I’ll definitely be trying more of their flavours next visit!
To start we had the Esquites, off the cob and in a bowl with cheese and sauce – tasty but small in portion. The Sesame Cauliflower was surprisingly good and very crispy. The Birria Tacos were delicious although a little different to usual. They had a lot more meat (with some fatty bits), no onion and no herbs. It came with more of a sauce than a consommé. Both the Fish and Chicken tacos were great. The churros were too doughy for my liking.
A pretty quiet vibe, music could be better and tables are pretty close together. If you’re dining on a Tuesday, you can take advantage of their Taco Tuesday Special which includes any 3 tacos, a drink (selected options) and a dessert for $30. It got quite busy around 6pm on a Tuesday so a booking is recommended.
