Cocina criolla is the cuisine created by the European (mostly Spanish) colonists using their traditional recipes made with native Caribbean foods and cooking styles. Sofrito is a versatile, aromatic purée of tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, onions, and garlic, which is the foundation of just about every Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican soup, stew, or sauce.

Located on busy Teaneck Road in Teaneck, this husband/wife duo, with the husband being Cuban and the wife Puerto Rican, operates the hidden gem that translates from the Spanish meaning “my roots.” The reservation was easily made by Google Assistant for Saturday dinner.

Upon arrival at Mis Raices, a bigger location after 3 years for some of us, my partner, our friends, and I got a table by the window immediately inside a cozy island vibe filled with the wonderful smell of the home-style food, the beautiful souvenirs of Puerto Rico and Cuba, and the vibrant salsa music.

The menu has been expanded since our last visit, so come hungry!

For appetizers, we decided on the Croqueta De Jamón, Croqueta De Pollo, and Guava Empanada. As a main meal, we opted for Arroz Con Pollo (Chicken with Rice), Pechuga De Pollo (Chicken Breast) A La Plancha with Salad, Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef) with Arroz Amarillo y Frijoles Negroes, and Oxtail/Rabo Encendido with Arroz con Gandules.

Complimentary toasted garlic bread started our meal. The meal was beautifully presented. The flavors were tastefully delicious and pretty consistent, being rich and authentic. The portion was just right with the price very reasonable, and it’s a BYOB. The owners, Ana and Eddie, and their staff make us feel welcome and are accommodating.

We can continue to recommend this place.

I am extremely disappointed with the order I received. As soon as I opened the container, there was a very strong and unpleasant odor coming from the meat, and it was immediately clear that it was not fresh.
This order was meant to be lunch for my mother and me in celebration of her birthday, and I was honestly embarrassed that this is what was served. This experience completely fell short of any reasonable expectation for food quality and safety.
If fresh, good-quality food cannot be provided, it should not be sent out at all. I hope this matter is taken seriously, as situations like this not only ruin special moments but also raise concerns about overall quality control.
I am requesting that this issue be addressed promptly and appropriately.

Went there looking for latin food and definitely took the best decision. Loved the food, loved the presentation of the dishes, loved the deserts. I’ll definitely be back.

Absolutely outstanding service and mouthwatering food! The **alcapurrias de yuca** transported me straight back to the island, capturing the true essence of Puerto Rican flavors. The restaurant maintains an exceptionally clean environment, including the bathrooms, which reflects the care and attention to detail of the owners.

A delightful touch was the freshly served garlic bread upon seating—it was simply delicious. The decor is a beautiful tribute to Puerto Rican heritage, evoking nostalgic memories for anyone familiar with the island’s history.

Every dish is consistently homemade and full of rich, comforting flavors, making this a must-visit spot for anyone craving authentic island cuisine. **Highly recommended**, especially for those longing for a taste of home. A true gem of a family-owned business!

We stopped off at this wonderful spot for some Puerto Rican food. I ordered the chuletas fritas with arroz con gandules and maduros. The chuletas were off the hook – absolutely finger-licking good! My wife ordered the pastelon de picadillo y platano, which was exceptionally good. My mango shake was a perfect accompaniment to my meal.

We finished our meal with great desserts: I had the flan, which was very good, and my wife had the Tres Leche Oreo, an excellent choice! The cafe con leche was the icing on the cake for a truly wonderful night out.

We highly recommend this lovely spot. And a special shout-out to our lovely waitress; she was wonderful!

I ordered the oxtail and it was severely undercooked, sitting in a quart container that was about 70% cooking oil. Not sauce — literal oil. Completely inedible and honestly a food safety concern. I’ve attached photos so others can see what was delivered. Absolutely disgusting.

A Hidden Puerto Rican Gem!

From the moment I walked in, I felt like family. The manager greeted me with a big smile and genuine warmth — you can tell they truly care about every guest that walks through the door. That personal touch made the experience even more memorable.

Now let’s talk about the food. The empanadas? Out of this world. Perfectly crispy on the outside, packed with flavorful, seasoned fillings on the inside. You can tell they’re made fresh and with love — they alone are worth the visit.

The rest of the menu doesn’t disappoint either, but those empanadas were easily the highlight. If you’re craving authentic Puerto Rican flavor and a welcoming atmosphere, this place is a must. I’ll definitely be back (probably just for a box of empanadas to-go)!

I’ve been to this restaurant a few times and it never fails. The food is so good and the people are so kind. The tostones are always cooked to perfection and are also crunchy, just how I like them. Their passion fruit juice is also very good. The garlic bread to start is a great little app.

I’ve been here 3 times and every time I come the prices change. They get expensive by the visit. Today I bought a tres leche cake and a piece of chocolate cake and they charged me $17!! Last time I went in I bought the same thing and was charged $9. While the food is pretty decent and the people are nice , I do feel like they make up prices as they go along which is not right at all. $6 for a cheese empanada is a bit much too.

I stopped by this restaurant on my lunch break, and I’m so glad I did! From the moment I walked in, the service was absolutely amazing—super friendly and welcoming. I ordered a dish that was not only delicious, but also had that comforting, homey taste that reminded me of authentic Puerto Rican cooking. Every bite was full of flavor and clearly made with love. The whole experience felt like being at a family gathering. I can’t wait to come back and try more from the menu!
