Reviews
Valentine could use a good Mexican food Restaurant.
We looked at the various reviews of the restaurant on Google, Trip Advisor, etc, but decided we would be our own judge of the food.
Preface: we grew up in western Nebraska where the Mexican food is delicious and plentiful, so we feel we have good taste when it comes to this food.
Upon entering the restaurant we found few tables available. We were early on a weekday (11:30) and were able to find a seat immediately, but it filled up quickly.
Service was good as we were served immediately, but had to pay $2.50 for the usually complimentary chips and salsa offered at other Mexican restaurants.
The menu looked pretty authentic with the usual Mexican food fare. When waitress returned to take our order we asked what was on the “smothered” burrito. She replied, lettuce, sour cream and olives…we knew this was not an authentic Mexican food establishment.
My wife ordered the tostada with beans and rice. The beans were obviously canned and not authentic.
I ordered the “Sample Platter” with a tamale, enchilada with green chile and hard taco with rice as my side.
Food was served quickly and with generous portions, which was the good news.
Bad news was that the food is basically American Mexican food. Food had good flavor, but was nowhere close to real Mexican food.
I applaud this establishment for opening this restaurant in this rural Nebraska town. They seem to have following, but did not do much for me.
I do not want to negatively review this place. The food was plentiful and actually tasty, just not real Mexican food.
1. I asked for a glass of water with lime, and they didn’t have lime. I repeat; a Mexican restaurant that didn’t have lime. Alright, lemon it was.
2. We ordered chips, salsa and queso dip. Only the salsa and chips came, we had to ask for the queso dip again. Alright, that can happen.
3. The chips were big, flaky tortilla chips, and not real Mexican chips. The salsa, wasn’t salsa, but spicy tomato sauce, and I’d put money on it being store bought. Not tasty at all.
4. The queso dip had much more in common with a bechamel sauce, than it did with queso dip. And it was bland. Quite unappealing.
5. I ordered the smothered burrito, and I barely touched it. The refried beans were severely overcooked, the green sauce had a funky taste, the shredded cheese was not cheese, and the pulled beef in the burrito was simply appalling. I suspect it to be canned roast beef, and the taste was really, really bad. My girlfriend ordered a sample a la carte dish, where all three items were below par.
6. We asked for the check, having barely touched our food, and the waitress asked if everything was alright (which was nice of her), and we told her, politely, that the food was way below expectations. She didn’t offer any compensation, and we ended up paying full price for a very, very poor meal. The waitress said she knew it wasn’t authentic Mexican, which would have been nice to know up front.
I went out and got dinner another place. How this place managed to get 4.1 stars combined from 60 people is beyond me. I wouldn’t trust the chef to cook a meal, any meal.
