What is a Charlie Boy you ask? Well, let’s get that out of the way. If you don’t care about this, or a little history, just skip to the next paragraph. Depending on what part of the country you are from, it will be one of numerous names which are basically all the same thing. A Tavern, a Loose Meat, or a Made-Rite. It’s basically cooked and seasoned burger in a bun, with your choice of ketchup, mustard, pickles, cheese, etc. the secret is in how the meat is cooked down. Is it a Sloppy Joe? No… those have tomato sauce/paste, and the others won’t. Fun fact, the Tavern sandwich, was first created as a “steamed hamburger” in 1920 by Carroll Dietz of Missoula Montana, and then in 1934 imitated by Abraham Kaled at the “Ye Olde Tavern” in Sioux City Iowa, which used to sit at 14th & Jackson. Anyhow, there’s a variety of ways it can be called or recognized.

Smiles for Miles. Very busy at peak hours but worth any wait. Definitely coldest beer in town.

Perfect Sunday afternoon at this classic tavern: two Charlie Boy sandwiches (ideal bar food, deliciously spiced ground beef in a bun with ketchup, mustard, and pickle), and a small bowling-ball sized iced schooner of red ale, with a couple of football games on the tvs. Great deal, too: just $11.50 — cash only, btw.

Love the Charlie Boys! IMHO these & Tastees are “made right”. (Loose meats, like pizza, are a taste you grow up with. These 2 are the best to me.) Bring on the peppery goodness!

I like Miles Inn and I am not a regular. It’s a cute little corner bar. My husband and I hadn’t been here in a couple of years. We’ve been there 2x in the 30-45 days. Both times we were told that they didn’t have any food. Then the bartender closed early. Probably 15 people were given last call in the daytime! We were really surprised.

So fun! Super friendly staff, super friendly customers (I was an out of towner and they didn’t let me pay for a thing!) The Charlie Boy w/ everything was fantastic! I will definitely be back to this cash only dive next time I’m in town.

Few places are as timeless as the Miles Inn. It’s exactly the same place as it was in 2003, when I first visited it; I have been told it’s also the same as it was in the 1960s. The beer is served in 20 oz goblets and is a great deal. The Charlie Boys are loose meat sandwiches that are tasty and reasonably priced
