Absolutely lived this restaurant. The most delicious authentic food. Super friendly and helpful staff. They even have a “shop” corner with food and merchandise. Cute space. Although I’d say they need a bigger place- need room to grow 🙂 I was lucky because I came in before lunch rush hour. Every seat got taken afterwards and there were people coming in for take out meals. Even in this busy time, the staff remained efficient and helpful. The noise level was pretty low, and seemed that everyone felt like they came home for lunch 🙂
My only regret is that I do not live nearby and only had one day in DC. I would love this restaurant to be my regular “to go to” spot.

We had an incredible experience at Mikko.
We started with the Nordic Old fashions, which were amazing. We shared the mushroom soup and the potato fondant, which can only be described as savory decadence. For our main course, we shared the hearty lamb and cabbage stew and it was hands down the best meal I’ve had in DC to date. Every bite was exceptional. The service was outstanding from start to finish. You absolutely need to eat here!

My wife took me to Mikko Nordic Fine Food earlier this year for my birthday dinner, and it was absolutely fantastic. As a side note, I’m 100% Finnish by heritage, third-generation born here in the United States, so experiencing this restaurant was truly a special treat for me.
From the moment we walked in, the place felt warm, inviting, and welcoming. It’s a smaller restaurant, but that only adds to the charm and cozy Nordic atmosphere. The hostess was incredibly friendly, greeted us with a genuine smile, and brought us right to our table. We did have reservations, and given the intimate size of the space, I would highly recommend doing the same.
We spent some time exploring the menu and ordered the Traditional Fish Soup, Beef & Mushroom Meatballs with Mashed Butter Beans, Cod Gratin with Mashed Potatoes, Karelian Pastry, and the Lonkero (Hartwall Original Long Drink). Every single dish was exceptional — beautifully prepared, comforting, and packed with authentic Nordic flavors.
The food honestly transported me back to my travels in Finland. The flavors, techniques, and overall execution felt genuine and thoughtfully done, not watered down or “Americanized.” It’s rare to find Nordic cuisine in the U.S. that feels this true to its roots, and Mikko absolutely delivers.
If you’re looking for an authentic Nordic dining experience, this place is hands-down one of the best I’ve had in the States. Whether you have Nordic roots or are simply curious to explore something different, Mikko Nordic Fine Food is a must-visit.

Gem of a place to get Finnish, Swedish, and (unfortunately) also American foods. We had a FANTASTIC Finnish server, which alone made it worth the trip from North Carolina. She was incredibly warm, friendly, attentive, and went out of her way to make my Finnish American kids and their Latino American kids feel welcome. The Finnish and Swedish cinnamon buns alone were better than what I am used to getting in both countries. The glögi/glögg (warm spiced wine) is homemade and worth getting if you are lucky to stop by during the holidays.
You’ve had every other cuisine in DC. If you haven’t had this, you are not really living your best life. This is like coming home to have your Nordic grandma cook for you. Except your grandma is younger, has great style, and is trying to cook you slightly healthier, more elevated classic meals.

Enjoying a lone brunch at Mikko was such a lovely Sunday treat. The folks who work there are kind and attentive, and the food was delicious. I had the salmon papusa with sunny-side-up eggs and a spiced chai. I usually have my tea with milk, but the flavor was so exceptional, I didn’t add anything. A really great, lowkey spot to enjoy the afternoon. Truly a gem!

We were visiting from out of town and decided to make a last minute reservation here for a nice birthday dinner. Despite being absolutely slammed with a party going on upstairs and all the tables booked, they gave us fantastic service. Everything came out promptly and the food was delicious! It really reminded us of home, especially the pork dumplings. It was like the best fusion of Korean and Finno-ugrian with the gochujang sour cream and dill oil. We loved all the Finnish candy for sale as well and the moomin decorations on the walls. You can tell the restaurant is made and run with a lot of love by the team who works there.

Came for drinks and appetizers on a weekend at peak hour and we were sat outside without a wait (2 people). No frill presentation but great execution. Drinks were unique and strong while the food was immaculate and exactly what we were looking for. They split the bowl of fish soup into two smaller bowls for us without issue and the flavor of our appetizer was great. Nice lowkey spot off of DuPont that we will certainly come back to.

Went there for crawfish and chef Mikko did not disappoint!!! Initially I thought 40 crawfish wouldn’t be enough for 2, but we were pretty full after eating them. We also ordered soup (crawfish soup and fish soup), both were delicious!
The only complaint I have is that the crawfish were a bit too salty.
