Tiny, low-key, family-owned eatery & bar serving burgers, hot dogs & its signature chili since 1922.

I love exploring the Seattle neighborhoods in Seattle! I get to see all the great architecture and art that is scattered about the city. Also, I will often stumble on old restaurants, bars, saloons…cafes nestled in side-streets. This is the case with Mike’s Chili Parlor in Ballard. I was walking along and saw a sign that said Mike’s Chili Since 1922 so I had to stop. The restaurant/tavern is small but inviting. I took a seat at the bar and read the old-time menu board with plastic letters and numbers. The Parlor offers chili with or without beans, which can be eaten by itself or put on burger, fries or dogs. They also serve burgers. I ordered the Straight Bowl, chili without beans. It was delicious! The thick chili had the perfect amount of spice with just enough kick. The service was good.

Unfortunately, we were really disappointed with the chili here. I had been looking forward to trying this place for a long time after driving by and seeing the big sign advertising their famous chili, so we were excited to finally stop in.
We paid $33 for what was supposed to be a quart, but nearly half the container was a thick layer of orange oil on top. After carefully spooning the oil out, the actual amount of chili left was surprisingly small.
Even then, the texture and flavor were not what we expected. The chili was mushy and unbalanced, and the overall taste and consistency just weren’t appealing. For the price, we were really hoping for something hearty, home-y, and even pleasantly greasy, not something that felt mostly like just grease and filler.
I really really don’t enjoy leaving negative reviews and even went and contemplated leaving one, but this was genuinely one of the most disappointing food experiences we’ve had. Hopefully our experience was a one-off, but we don’t see ourselves coming back.
We ordered:
A quart of their meat chili.
Fixins on the side.
$33

I love this place! Just drove up from San Francisco, where I heard about it. I think this is my new Seattle office.
Great original chili, super generous portions, great flavour, and no fear of more peppers if you want to spice it up.
I had the all meat chili and the hand pressed deluxe burger. A perfect pairing with the Men’s Room IPA. I’ll work my way across all the other local tap offerings as I get through the other menu items.
The menu has lots to explore. I wish I could have moved it to Niagara Falls for the Bikes and Barrels opening night feast.
Only one person knows the chili recipe… not even grandma knows it all.
Be aware… they like cash. They charge a fee for cards, so hit your favorite atm on the way here.

Moved to Seattle 30 years ago and finally made my way to Mike’s. What a breath of fresh air, reminds me of the way Seattle was when I moved here. The bartender was great, tons of personality without any pretend niceness. The owner was there and exudes “I would have a beer with that guy!” I had an ice cold beer and a small chili cheese fries (both outstanding). Cash only but plenty of warning signs throughout. Looks like they are having a music festival in August and I will be back for that!! Highly recommended.

I got a quart of chili. Damn near half of it was just oil. Straight up oil. I had to use my card so there was an extra fee but even though they advertise it for 20 I ended up leaving paying 33. $33 for a quart of chili (and only half of it is edible) ain’t it

This is what Seattle dive bars used to be, before they all started to try and be hip. I’d use “consistent” if i only had one word. And delicious but definitely as my second word, cause not everyone likes chilli. The only thing that changes is the amount of people, which is why i love it. You’ll love it or hate it, just be sure to find out which by stopping through.
Chilli-always on point.
Staff-present (friendly, maybe, but this isn’t the type of place you go to have someone carter to your need to be liked.)
Cash-Only! (Which is one of the many reasons I love this place)

I’ve seen this place quite often And was really excited to go, it’s hard to show up here around my work schedule. I finally found a day and went out of my way to go there only to get rejected at 23 and 24 years old because they didn’t want to look at our non-expired IDs Simply because it was a vertical. This is really frustrating, Given the fact that We weren’t even given the opportunity to order food to go and our id aren’t expired :/ Hopefully, they can update some policies to welcome more than willing customers!

Good place for greasy hamburgers and chili. Chili fries were tasty and hamburger patties could have been bigger to cover the actual buns, but still good. Do I think this was life-changing chili? No, there’s better chili elsewhere, but I get the neighborhood vibe and service was fantastic. Bring cash, they don’t take credit cards.

It feels like the recipe for this chili is quite literally ground beef, one type of bean, and oil. Equal parts of each ingredient. I can’t imagine having chili anywhere else and claiming this is even average chili. It was quite below average. It didn’t taste “bad” mostly because all i tasted was beans, beef, and cheese.

Great experience at Mike’s Chili Parlor. I visited on a Monday night to a quiet bar. The bartenders were friendly and considerate, it was not like some other reviews I had seen. I had the chili pasta and the chili fries and both were great. The chili pasta is probably not exactly like Cincinnati chili but it was delicious nonetheless. The chili fries were messy and amazing as well. Long live Mike’s Chili Parlor.
