Reviews
The servers were very nice and everything came out quick.
The gyoza was pretty good though soft not crispy. The $1 edamame for the happy hour was a great appetizer. We really liked the salmon roll. The gyudon and karaage don werent our favorites though. The beef and karaage were both pretty good but the rice in my opinion was over cooked and a bit too mushy/flavorless. The matcha cheesecake was fine but real dense and not very matchay.
On a not really related note i really liked the green tea bottle they had but obviosly just a standard drink
The staff all appear to work very hard and is nonstop running around, but they seem to be understaffed for it took around 20 minutes for them to clear our table (as you can see in the photo the dishes piling up) and we also had to ask multiple times for a tea refill, which also took another 20 minutes.
We were also misinformed by our server regarding the $99 Set For 2, where we were told it came with two sets of 8 pieces of sushi each, and one hand roll each, when in fact it was 8 pieces of sushi shared between two, and the only thing that was doubled was the tuna ball (which they were kind enough to switch to salmon for my wife who is breastfeeding, which we really appreciated), madai, and tuna sashimi; if we knew, we would’ve ordered two premium sets instead for a similar price. We were also told there would be an otoro piece but it ended up just being a regular tuna piece as evident in the photo. Although most of the fish were fresh, the ones we looked forward, the uni (sea urchin from California), was not and had a bitter/stinky aftertaste, which is a tell-tale sign of poor quality uni. What also disappointed us further was that the wagyu uni hand roll came with cold wagyu, which I guess is a personal preference but it wasn’t freshly made. We do however really love that their hand rolls have seaweed that is wrapped with pull apart plastic to keep the seaweed fresh with optimal crispness, so five stars to that! Since we weren’t full, we ordered the miso black cod bento box, which was also very disappointing since it was pretty mild in miso and didn’t have the nice brown glistening glaze that most miso black cod has, and there were also 6 pieces of bones (as evident in the photo) where most professionally served miso black cod are served boneless. Thus, despite the dish being so pretty with delicious pumpkin puree, the main star of the show fell extremely short. Their matcha pudding and matcha ice cream were pretty good, highly recommend them! Nonetheless, the quality of their selection unfortunately did not justify their high price point in our opinion.
Ultimately, although we were excited and have high hopes that Mikado will continue to improve as they work through their kinks of being a brand new restaurant, we were nonetheless disappointed by the misinformation, poor quality of the sea urchin, and the inconsistent service, which I understand will take time for them to develop their rhythm. Overall, the aesthetics of the restaurant and the presentation of the food, especially the hand rolls, are all on point and perfect as is, I just hope this review can continue to help Mikado improve and grow to become one of the best and most elegant Japanese restaurant in all of Staten Island.
The service is attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed but still nice enough for a date night or dinner with friends. Orders come out quickly, and they’re great with both dine-in and takeout.
If you’re craving reliable, fresh sushi with great service, Mikado never disappoints. Definitely a go-to spot.
