Reviews
We went to Mickey’s Place when we were craving sushi for dinner. We’d passed by this restaurant many times before and always found it closed. From the outside, the windows looked dirty, and the signs on the window were faded and barely readable. When we finally noticed a sign on the door behind the gate saying they’re open from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, we decided to give it a try since it’s in our neighborhood.
Inside, the interior was casual and plain; no tablecloths, and the menu was just an 8×10 sheet of paper inside a plastic protector. We ordered the sashimi and sushi combo ($39.95). The waitress mentioned it would be the chef’s choice of sashimi.
The presentation was average. It included:
2 pieces of yellowtail
3 pieces of tuna
2 pieces of salmon
2 pieces of white fish
2 tuna sushi, 1 white fish sushi, and 1 yellowtail sushi
What really disappointed me was that an imitation crab stick, a cooked shrimp, and a piece of egg were counted as sashimi. For the price, I expected better quality and authenticity, though the portion size was just fair.
There was also some inconsistency with communication. One waitress mentioned the green tea was $2 per cup, so I only ordered one. Later, another waitress told us it was actually complimentary — a bit confusing.
The waitress recommended the Futomaki, saying it was “the best in town.” It was slightly larger than usual, filled with avocado, tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet), cucumber, fish roe, and imitation crab stick but missing the usual kanpyo (gourd strip). She suggested we order half a roll for half the price ($21.95 full price), which was considerate, but still felt pricey for just four pieces.
We also ordered a Dragon Roll (only five pieces) and a Salmon Avocado Roll, which oddly wasn’t listed on the menu even though that’s a standard item at most Japanese restaurants.
Our bill came to $101 with tax, handwritten on a guest check pad, with some items scribbled on a scrap piece of paper. For a restaurant charging that much, the lack of professionalism really stood out.
Overall, while the staff were polite, I didn’t feel I received good value for the price. The food quality, presentation, and overall experience didn’t meet expectations.
Unfortunately, I won’t be returning.
There is so much fresh, unique and delicious choices! We love their seafood salads (no salad for me), special bombs and rolls!
Thank you for still being my #1 place to eat!!
If you’re looking for the freshest, most delicious sushi and rolls in ny this is the spot. The sushi chef Mickey is a true artisan, you cannot go wrong with anything here.
That being said the dragon roll and Boston rolls are definitely a favorite.
We started with their “share plate” tempura appetizer. Impressively, the restaurant uses regular paper towel instead of tempura paper which I never experienced in my life.
We ordered one sushi set and one chirashi. Ok.. chirashi is not on the meun but they nice enough to make one for us. However, the rice level is way too less to compare with any other chirashi in Queens.
I have to agree their sushi rice is kind of the best one in this neighborhood.
