Social Profile:

Michael’s is one of Southern Illinois’ finest dining establishments and has now served the community for over 80 years, since 1941. Only 30 minutes from St. Louis, Belleville, Alton, O’Fallon, Granite City – less from Edwardsville and Collinsville – Michael’s has taken care to advance a reputation for exquisite dining, touched ever so slightly with stained glass windows, leisure ceiling fans, deep wood, carpeting, and candlelight for date night. All this would be nothing without the incomparable cuisine that comes from the skill of head chef, Gaye Michael, who obtains the best – fresh seafood, Italian food, prime cuts of Iowa beef, Wisconsin milk-fed prime veal.

I wish it was better. It could be better. It should better.

Michael’s has the potential to be as good as the prices and ambiance indicate it should be. I’m a bit of an outsider, a visitor to the area, so my opinion is not that of a locals. That said, you may not agree.

The food was okay…ish… Yes, it was tasty. Yes, I ate it. But it wasn’t on par with my expectations when I walked into the place.

The building exudes history. From the hand forged iron handle you pull to enter the restaurant to the beautiful fireplace and photos on the wall, this restaurant has so much potential.

The staff were great. The service was on time and professional. The decore and structure and plates and silverware and the baby grand piano and the beams and … Well, let’s just say the food could be, no should be better. Everything else demands it.

I don’t like leaving less than 5-star reviews. I want my contributions to be positive, but this less than 5 star review will hopefully encourage Michael’s the take back their place as a 5 star restaurant and charge even more for their steak. I would pay more if it were better. Cooked to order. Able to cut easily with a sharp knife. And, deliciously tender.

The entree just wasn’t edible. It was chicken cordon bleu, one of the specials, and it was so bad. The pasta it was sitting on was mushy and not fresh and coated with too much of an unpleasant tomato sauce. The chicken was definitely frozen and pre-packaged from some food service, not fresh at all. So dry, more like cardboard. Basically school cafeteria food. I mean, look at it. I’m posting a picture. The appetizer was alright, and I loved the atmosphere. I just really wish the main course would’ve been edible. Dessert was okay, decent. The piano player was the best part! We had been here for Valentine’s Day, and it was fine. I don’t know what happened to this place.

Valentines Day dinner was a bust. I booked a reservation almost 2 weeks in advance. We arrived 39 minutes early, checked in and had drinks at the bar. When we were seated, they put us in the very back of the building with poor ambiance and a tiny table in a corner. I got the pork chop which was over cooked to the point of charred. Not a fan of any of the salad dressing they offered, no alternatives as the soup option was sold out by 7pm. My wife got the filet. Was cooked decently but was very small for the price tag. We both got a baked potato with our meal (only option) that were also way overcooked. I could possibly understand if it was a packed house but that wasn’t the case. Only good thing I can say about the experience is my wife liked the chocolate martini they had as a featured drink.

I don’t like leaving this review because there’s a whole lot to like about this place, but I felt it was a hard miss because of the food. For as expensive as it is to eat here, it just wasn’t anything memorable or “have to have again” compared to the other options for Italian in this area. The service was very good, the location is nice, and the staff are all friendly so there’s lots to like here. I recommend going here to give them your business because they’re definitely worth a shot, but I just wasn’t impressed with what I came there for – the food. Read this as a subjective review because of that.

We sent our food back and left. The service was great and we felt bad about the poor food quality. The crab cakes weren’t fully cooked and strangely plated over sautéed onions and green peppers. The ribeye wasn’t a ribeye and the meat had no flavor itself instead it had a salty gravy sauce. The scorpion salmon was overcooked and dry and the sautéed spinach had a metallic taste. The kind of taste where you end up with food poisoning. Even the baked potatoes tasted off. We have never sent food back and left a restaurant without a meal. They still charged us for it and we did pay the entire $110 bill though.

Very nice decor. Staff all seem cordial, professional, and anxious to provide excellent service. This was an event buffet with average food – since we had never eaten here before, we were told by locals that the menu selections are much better.

First time there. Spacious and clean. Staff friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Our party (9) had steaks and pastas with salads. We had alcoholic drinks. Drinks are unusual and very good. Our server Dan was excellent. He was efficient and checked on us regularly. Nice size servings. Alfredo sauce was different. On the sweet side. Those who had it didn’t really care for it. Steaks, salads and chocolate cake were good. Loved the icing. We’d return for lunch sometime. Worth a try.

Lisha & I had a great evening at Michael’s in Highland. The food was great. Our server was attentive and perfect in everything. To top it off the lady playing the live piano made the night. Thank you!
