Mian Sichuan Noodles (Santa Clara) 滋味小麵

Social Profile:

Mian, a restaurant brand focusing on Sichuan-style noodles, provides young locals a simple while authentic way to have Chinese food. “There is nothing quite like Mian. The flavors are bright and clean, informed as much by the tart funkiness of Sichuan pickles as by pure chili heat; the noodles… have an integrity and chew you might associate with good Italian pasta.” — Jonathan Gold, Los Angeles Times

Ordered the spicy braised beef noodle and a steamed egg as an appetizer. Steamed egg is a steamed egg in a metal cup, it has some ground pork and some of the minced spiced pork. Has most of the flavors you would get with the spiced noodle dish but with eggs.

The real dish or star was the spicy braised beef noodle. The broth was rich but not too “thick” or rich with flavor. It’s enough to get the main components and not be overpowering to take away from the noodles, etc. noodles taste fresh and cooked well. Al dente and has a good chew behind it.

Service wise, you order at your table via QR code. I’ve gone on my lunch break. You often have to wave someone down if you want the check, don’t expect someone to provide table side service or drop a check if they noticed you’re finished.

This place is crazy busy on the weekend and parking can be tough in the strip mall. We can about 2pm on a Saturday and there was a good 20 minute wait. Once inside, you scan a QR code to order. If you need recommendations or help ordering, the staff is there to assist. I found ordering from my phone was quicker than waiting for someone to take my order. From there the staff had more time to provide service. They brought our food and checked up on us and cleared plates regularly. You definitely want to get the sides to share and a big bowl of noodles.

This review is almost a Tale of Two Cities for me….

On the plus side, Bay Area needs a place like Mian Sichuan Noodles (MSN)y that provides delicious foods (especially Beef Noodle Soup & side dishes) at reasonable price points with homey feels that we used to feel while back home growing up in Asia, noatter what regions – TW, CN, HK or Singapore. Nowadays, other nearby Beef Noodle Soup places charging a small bowl of our comfort food with merely 3-4 beef pieces visible costing at least $20 a bowl or more (vs. MSN offers more beef and better taste at ~$14 a bowl ‼️) Furthermore, these other places aren’t all that good, I find my Instant Beef Noodle from Taiwan tastes better, some even have beef briskets in the seasoning pouches. Only MSN offers and strikes a good balance of taste, affordability (so I can do 3-4 times a week ), and good atmosphere where lots of people salivating for that hometown comfort tastes.

However, not even a year in, the place already been shut down; it’s really sad!

I hope they will regroup and open at this same location that sits conveniently right across from Kaiser Santa Clara medical complex.

This place uses the Toast-app for managing orders so you can do a table group order or split your ordering. I started from the QR code scan but after a notification on my phone I had difficulty retrieving the order page. One of the staff quickly came to the rescue with his ipad to capture our order. The small appetizers are good size and price. (4-stars) The mains are pretty tasty & reasonable (3.5 stars). This hit my spicy Asian food/noodle craving. Food arrives very quickly in case you need to get back to work. Water is self-service (nice carafe on the table) in a paper cup. The environment is clean but crowded (there was a line near noon) and a get-in/get-out diner vibe. I think it might be difficult to socialize here.

I ordered short ribs noodle soup . Although I know that Sichuan food is usually spicy, it was still beyond my tolerance.

The noodles were cooked to a good texture, but the pork ribs were not soft enough and the soup was too spicy for me.

Will come back to try other non-spicy items !

A very lively and busy place. We arrived at 5:50pm but it was already packed with people. Luckily, we got the last table.

The restaurant was decorated with nice paintings on the walls that added to the vibe. Reminds me a lot when I was back in Asia.

As a party of 5, we got to order many different dishes: steamed eggs, Dandan Mian, Spicy Beef Broth noodles, Vege & Tomato noodle soup, Beef fried rice, Spicy Wonton and Beef Roll pancakes. The food was good except for the dried noodles Dandan Mian which is not to my liking (but one of our friends really loves it), the rest was delicious and full of flavors. For drinks, we only ordered cold soy milk but it was also tasty. Not too sweet.

Overall pretty good and reasonable prices. My husband and I got the beef pancake rolls, chill oil wontons, braised beef noodle soup, and the zajiang mian. The appetizers were both good. The beef noodle soup was honestly just okay and I’ve had much better elsewhere. The zajiang mian was the best dish though! Overall we thought everything was just a little bit smaller in portions than expected (had to order extra noodles) but we enjoyed the meal nonetheless.

Restaurant vibes and service also good!

Stepping in from the parking lot feels like stepping into a graphic novel. A very colorful and interesting one. Beautiful murals on the wall and bright pops of black, white and red. First you feast with your eyes and then you catch a whiff of that delicious scent that you came here looking for. Scan the QR code once you get to a table and start your order using Toast. No account required, you can order as a guest. The menu is a pretty detailed with photos on the app, so take your time. I selected the Spicy Braised Beef Noodles, medium spicy. For the group, we ordered gyoza, Steamed Egg with minced pork, Fried Chinese Donut with warm soy milk, Beef Roll Pancake and Brown Sugar Sticky Rice. Everything we ordered was spectacular. Picking a favorite would be very difficult, but there are some things that I had not tried before. Steamed egg is very similar to a silken custard. It’s savory because of the pork. But you can add additional chili sauce if you would like to make it spicier. It was delicious. The gyoza were crisped to perfection. Beef roll pancake was something I had not had before and it was really good. The entire pancake is fried before being sliced into portions. Dip that in some vinegar and it’s magic. The Chinese donut you can either dip in the warm soy milk or into your soup. It isn’t sweet or savory so can go either way. Very fresh! My spicy braised beef soup was extremely good, happy with medium spice. They also make a version that instead of broth uses more of a sauce. If you want a more intense heat level. That one also comes with a fried egg which one of my friends got and was very happy with. The Brown Sugar Sticky Rice is technically a dessert, but I suggest you eat them as soon as they arrive at the table while they’re nice and hot. These little sticks are about the size of a mozzarella stick but they are mochi that has been deep fried and rolled in brown sugar and cinnamon. They are a new favorite! We ordered a lot and we took a lot home. No regrets! Some tips for this place. We were there in the middle of the afternoon and it was very busy. Expect to wait but know that it is well worth it. The parking lot of the shopping center this restaurant is in is very busy, be patient or order takeout. This food’s delicious and totally worth the inconvenience.

Chengdu Zajiang Noodles and Steamed Egg with Minced Pork are tied as my number 1 dish from what I have had at Mian’s. Noodle dish was sweet, with a bit of spicy kick. Can’t describe the other unfamiliar flavor but very good. You can choose the level of spiciness.
Steamed egg was silky with sweet salty flavor from the minced pork and sauce. Also very good.
Chili Oil Wonton had a tasty filling wrapped in thin smooth wrapper; in generous chili oil. Got it mild and it was plenty spicy for me.
Beef Roll Pancake was also good.
Brown Sugar Sticky Rice for dessert had maple syrup like sauce and topped with brown sugar.
Reasonably priced. Nice staff. Bright open dining area and spacious despite having a lot of diners on a Friday evening. They give you a discount if you roll the dice with a matching number. Plenty of parking.

The food at Mian is extremely delicious and fresh. It came out quickly once we ordered through a QR code, and everything was piping hot. I really loved the Zhajiang noodles which we could choose the spice level to our liking. The sweet soy milk was also a highlight because it tasted fresh and reminded me of breakfasts I had in Taiwan.

The only downside is the restaurant is EXTREMELY loud so you can’t easily have a conversation. This didn’t matter too much to me because I was here to eat, but if you’re meeting up to catch up with a friend or on a date, it is a bit too loud.
