The food was not great. Chips and salsa were good. The shrimp dishes were also pretty good. The pork tamale was so bad as to be inedible. It wasn’t just that it was very dry, it also had a really off flavor that was nasty. The beans were bland but ok. The Spanish-style rice had a weird flavor. The shredded beef taco was ok after adding some of the salsa to it. Flour tortillas were flavorless – tasted like store-bought. The corn tortillas are definitely purchased and mass produced. Totally flavorless and a bit stale.
There are probably a few things that are reasonably good to get and if you only stick with them you might be ok. It would be a bit of a minefield until you figure out what they are.
Chips and salsa are $2.95??? I’ve never paid for them in any Mexican restaurant. There is also a one refill max policy on soft drinks. Just thought to mention these two things.
+ Hearty and filling food — feels like a home cooked meal
+ Really loved the Tamales here in the red sauce. DELICIOUS!
+ Complimentary chips and salsa. Bonus points for chips being warm 🙂 The salsa was decent but a little runny and mild. It had a really fresh and light taste, but not much spice.
+ They serve beer and wine at very reasonable prices
+ Super dark (but spacious) interior that made me claustrophobic. There are no windows or natural light coming in besides the front door so it feels really closed off, dingy, and stuffy
+ We opted to sit at the outdoor patio which is lovely, bright, and colorful
+ Service was a little weird and cold at first. We asked to sit on the patio since the weather was nice and our server seemed a little irritated by that. He made a disapproving comment initially and made another comment that the phones rings a lot and he likes to close off the patio again while we were closing out our bill. Eventually throughout the meal he warmed up a little more to us, but we felt like we were walking on eggshells the whole meal. What’s the point of having a nice patio if customers aren’t welcome to use it?!
+ Large parking lot with plenty of spots available
+ Right across from Foster Freeze! I didn’t see a dessert menu here so if you’re looking for something sweet to end your meal Mi Casa is conveniently located to Foster’s Freeze.
Overall, our experience was okay but nearing on the weird side. It was an unusual experience with the whole patio situation but nonetheless we enjoyed the food for the most part. It wasn’t the best, but it was better than average!
