Reviews
Great food, great drinks, great music, even better staff
I had their Hummus, Taco Arabe, and Lemonade Arabe and all were top notch
Hummus 9/10: hummus has been the best that I’ve had in the Sac area, though I do prefer pita bread served with the hummus
Taco Arabe 10/10: HUGE portion, easlily shareable, great savory taste of al pastor lamb
Lemonade Arabe: 15/10 hands down some of the best Arab lemonade I’ve had
Wonderful hospitality
Hope this place gets the attention it deserves!
First, let’s get the disclaimers out of the way. Meza is a business in the Alchemist Kitchen Incubator Program. I am the CEO of Alchemist CDC, home of that program. I’ve had the good fortune to know Kasandra, the founder of Meza, since she first joined our program a few years ago. So I went into this lunch with the expectation of enjoying the food, and cannot escape an underlying bias, BUT I feel certain that the experience of my taste buds was not biased.
This was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. This is not an exaggeration. My friend and I split the shakshouka and the Taco Arabe. I’ve had several other Meza entrees before, but these two were new to me. I had the Amanecer for my beverage.
The shakshouka: I like shakshouka and it’s hard to go wrong with it in general, but when I have ordered it at restaurants before it always suffers in a couple of ways. It’s very common for the tomatoes to be too-watery and lacking in flavor. It’s also really common for the eggs to be overcooked and lacking in flavor. This is NOT the case at Meza. The tomatoes were deep and rich and the egg’s savory flavors shone through. And then, I added the complimentary hot sauce and the flavors were *perfectly* balanced. This was an incredible lunch but would also be a phenomenal breakfast or brunch.
The Taco Arabe: I like lamb. I have always liked lamb. The al pastor lamb in this dish was — without a doubt — the best lamb I have ever had. It was tender and moist and bursting with flavor. The arugula, pickled onions, etc., were the perfect complements and didn’t overwhelm the meat. I don’t know where the arugula was sourced, but I have to note that even alongside the lamb and the pickled onions, the arugula was a star on its own. So fresh, so peppery. I will think back to this dish many, many times in the future.
The Amanecer: this is a blend of the house Jamaica Rosada (hibiscus tea) and Limonada Arabe (lemonade with mint and orange blossom). I have previously had Meza’s Jamaica and Limonada separately, and both are great. But if you have the chance, get the Amanecer. The flavors blend so beautifully. It is so easy to overwhelm a beverage with mint, but the mint here brings a bright finish to every swig that feels like a celebration of the hibiscus and lemon. This beverage works as a dessert. It works as a mocktail.
You need to visit Meza California. If you eat there once, you will become a regular.
