We stopped into Mexicali Allies on Saturday around 5:45 pm because we’d heard great things about their desserts. Since we’d already had dinner elsewhere, we planned to just order dessert before they closed at 7. The restaurant was very quiet — only a few tables were occupied, and at least one group was already finishing up.

The waitress seated us, and when we told her we were only there for dessert, she seemed surprised but still friendly. A few minutes later, the owner (we assume) came over and, with a noticeably harsh attitude, told us we “can’t come in here for just dessert” because they’re “not a bakery.”

I’ve never experienced an owner speaking to customers that way, especially when the restaurant wasn’t busy and we were simply looking to enjoy something they’re known for. It was uncomfortable and honestly pretty embarrassing to be scolded for trying to give a business our money.

This was my first visit, and unfortunately it will be my last. I hope the owner reconsiders how situations like this are handled, because a little courtesy would have gone a long way.

2nd time getting Doordash delivery, fast, decent prices. I just wish desserts were on their delivery menu. The food was great, cheese & onion enchiladas, chunky beef burritos & chips & salsa. Yummy, comfort food.

the food is delicious, authentic, and diverse. the service is friendly and personable. i often find myself comparing food to mexicali and more, thinking “could sandy and joe make this even better than the place i am at did?” and the answer has always been yes. i am proud to have such amazing chefs locally.

Went with a friend on my lunch hour and it was great. In and out on time and the food was good. I liked the portions for the price (I ordered the 2 mini chimmies) PLUS there dessert menu is AMAZING! Could probably be a bakery as well!! I did think the cost of the desert I got was a little high ($7) but only because that means I can’t get it that often…

The service was nice, they where very friendly. The food was not the best, had a large nacho with chorizo and it just tasted like beans, we think there wasn’t any chorizo. All the toppings just put on top, not cut into nice sizes. My sons chimi was okay
Also it’s really dark inside and no Mexican music, it’s not a fun atmosphere.

I’ve been eating at Mexicali since I was a baby (in their original location and in their new one). I love the food and the atmosphere. It’s a great treat when I get to come as I no longer live in Michigan. Highly recommend!
