The food was good, but not worth the wait, especially at $20 for a small appetizer salad.
The service was friendly, but inattentive.
The beet salad is an absolute dream — vibrant, crisp, and perfectly balanced with flavors that feel both refreshing and indulgent. And the wild-caught salmon? Simply mouthwatering. Cooked to perfection every single time, it melts in your mouth and leaves you savoring every last bite. But the true star for me will always be the French onion soup. Rich, deeply flavorful, and soul-warming, it’s hands down the best I’ve ever had and a must-have on every visit. No trip to Honolulu feels complete without stopping here and ordering it.
The service is just as spectacular as the food. The staff are warm, attentive, and make you feel genuinely welcomed, whether you’re dressed up for a special occasion or just casually stopping by. On my last visit, I was out on a walk and a little underdressed, but I still felt completely comfortable and cared for, which speaks volumes about the atmosphere and hospitality here.
This place isn’t just a restaurant — it’s an experience, a memory, and a tradition I hold close. It’s a reminder of cozy evenings, peaceful lunches, and moments of pure joy over beautifully crafted meals. I will forever cherish it and will always make it a priority whenever I’m back in Honolulu. Truly a gem that never disappoints.
However, our “fresh catch” mahi (not pictured) was overly salty and buttery, our steak and frites (not pictured) came undercooked, the meat had a bland meat taste and texture was rubbery, our waitress went missing after our table was cleaned after we finished our dinner.
I admit, the vibe is great, music a little loud for me, so it’s great for groups and families that just come to grab a bite. For a family like ours whose focus is mainly on the good food in a restaurant, we were very disappointed.
I hope to return, but want better quality food next time.
NO REGARD FOR VEGETARIANS! As a high end restaurant, I would expect to have amazing dishes for EVERYONE.
Merriman’s is a nice restaurant with some amazing dishes (organic chicken on a skillet as an example), and we went there few times. BUT! I put 2 stars because the disregard for vegetarians is shocking. I went with my husband who is vegetarian, and everything was great until we ordered a main dish for him (falafel). My dish has arrived all good-looking and nice-sized (chicken on a skillet) and his dish looked like a tiny meal for toddlers. It was also bland on top of that… It is a MAIN dish! And the only dish for vegetarians!! (That was about a 6 months ago; now they have mushroom ravioli “seasonally”, but I still doubt it would be that exciting)
Why is “main” falafel dish made so sad and tiny?!? Its ruining experience for couples where one person is vegetarian.
As a high end restaurant – come on. DO BETTER. Create equally excellent and exciting main dishes for vegetarians.
The commitment to local ingredients really shines through in the food. We shared the Tableside Poke, which was fresh and delicious. For mains, the Macadamia Nut Crusted Monchong was cooked perfectly. Even the kids found plenty to enjoy—it’s rare to find a place that balances high-end cuisine with a family-friendly vibe this well.
Service was great – our server, Alisa and team, was attentive and gave great recommendations. If you are looking for a true taste of Hawaii that works for a nice family night out, this is the spot. Highly recommend!
Update: we came back to try its happy hour menu. The farm to table cocktail of water Mellon and tequila was quite good. Now I don’t feel guilty drinking alcohol anymore because it’s now “farm to table” fresh! The food was tasty as before, with creative combination of ingredients. The Kailua pork quesadilla served with poi and kimchee was a good example of how Merriman’s made it work.
Original review: Our server was superb and the ambience was relaxing and comfortable. Not only our server was good, I also noticed how every employee was really into his or her job. The management did a very nice job training and motivating its staff. We sat in front of the kitchen and had a great view how the kitchen and the wait staff all working together. Kudos! The food was excellent and the price was reasonable. The taro hummus appetizer was one of the best hummus we have had and the it was garnished with bits and pieces of fresh vegetables, a great combination. The burger was very tasty (but just a tad on the salty side) and it came with some very good fries. The buttermilk dressing for the fries was one of the best. The fish sandwich was also quite good. The Nerrimen’s Maitai was just okay. We will return to try other dishes and its desserts.
