Merrill & Houston’s has branded itself to tell a great story, but most importantly, its focus is on the classic steakhouse with the highest quality steaks and seafood with down-to-earth and attentive service that makes you feel like you are at your best friend’s home.
Choice steakhouse serving up surf ’n’ turf & cocktails in a wood-paneled space with a classic feel.

We have always loved M&H. We even plan ahead of time and buy the Black Friday gift certificate deal. We visited this time for
My MIL birthday. It was not great. Past two
Or three visits have been subpar for
The food. This chicken was literally like it was boiled. Might go elsewhere for special occasions. The service was still top notch

We had a wonderful time here for our anniversary. Everything was great—the service, food, drinks. Not a single complaint. Our server, Aaron, was attentive and timed our meal out nicely. We ordered calamari, steak bites, the cowboy steak, and the filet. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. The calamari was the best I’ve ever had!

2.5 stars. Atmosphere was very nice, waitress was OK, but the food was not the best for what the restaurant is charging. My husband got a 10oz filet for his main dish and he said it was the driest steak he has ever had and that he has had better steak at Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn Steakhouse. He got the lobster bisque soup and said it was OK, I got the French onion soup and thought it was good. My main dish was the lemon chicken piccata and honestly wasn’t very good. The chicken’s texture seemed like it was boiled first and then briefly seared in a pan and I wasn’t a fan of the sauce that was over the chicken. I know a lot of others like this place but it wasn’t for us unfortunately.

This is our first time at the restaurant and we made plans a few weeks in advance for Valentine’s Day weekend. The menu online looked interesting and although expensive it was a special night out. We arrive early on purpose and sat at the bar to have a relaxing drink. The bar staff was attentive and crafted an excellent Manhattan.
We were seated right on time for our reservation with a table overlooking the river, where we could enjoy a quiet meal. But this is where things started to go wrong. The menu that we had planned around online was not available but rather a special Valentine’s Day menu was the only option. This was not published online. The only steaks available were an American Wagyu New York strip for $90 and a smothered ribeye for way more than that. SURPRISE! We asked if any of the standard menu was available. No.
We punted and ordered the NY strip and split it along with the accompanying sides. Not what we had planned but made the best of what we had to work with. The food was good but not great. Certainly not $90 worth of great for a steak.
We went thinking this could be a go to steakhouse for us when we wanted to splurge. We did not anticipate $PLURGE.
Probably won’t be back.

As a loyal patron since 2019, it pains me to report the recent decline in quality at what was once my go-to steakhouse. The Porterhouse “the king of steaks” and Cowboy Ribeye were consistently exceptional for years, making this establishment my top recommendation for both business dinners and special occasions.
Unfortunately, my last three visits have been disappointing. The most recent experience was particularly troubling – my steak arrived raw, and when sent back, returned overcooked and dry. My wife’s pork chop was also overcooked and dry. The calamari was problematic – poorly prepared, swimming in oil, with minimal portions for $17, and unfortunately made my wife ill.
The guest reception service has also deteriorated significantly. Despite having a reservation, we were ignored upon arrival and waited 10 minutes past our scheduled time without proper acknowledgment or explanation. One of the attendants even suggested to dine at the bar to which I explained that I wouldn’t have reserved table if we want to sit at a bar and we might as well go somewhere else. I found this particularly unprofessional.
This dramatic shift in quality is especially disheartening given the restaurant’s previous reputation for phenomenal service and consistently delicious food. While I understand restaurants face challenges, the combination of poor food preparation, reduced portion sizes, and subpar service makes it difficult to justify the premium pricing.
I can no longer recommend this place.

Nice place for a nice dinner. Love their bread and butter. Service was great. Extra requests were granted without question.

Made a reservation 2 months ago for a valentines day date night. We were very excited, looked at the menu before hand and knew exactly what we wanted. When we got there we were sat in the way back of the restaurant. I’m pretty sure they open the space for events if it’s going to be a busy evening, but it was 415 and we were a little put out by the lack of atmosphere. (Kinda felt like the nose bleed section) The table we were sat at was also out of level by a couple of inches. Those weren’t necessarily show stoppers, but they did put a damper on the night. We then looked at the menu and noticed that it was abbreviated for the holiday. The only reason why this review salvaged two stars was the professionalism of the staff. (Liz, hostess and Jasmine, waitress) were efficient, polite, and took excellent care of us in the brief time we were there. We would not recommend this place for holidays or special events.

My husband and I enjoyed our visit to M&H. We had the Shrimp de Jonghe and Feta & Artichoke for appetizers, both were delicious. I had the French Onion Soup, it looked amazing. I was disappointed though. I felt it was lacking in flavor. The waitress was very kind and apologetic that I didn’t like it. We told her it was fine. She didn’t charge us for it, even though we told her that we would. Then she brought out our main course. We had the surf and turf. It was beyond delicious. The 10 oz South African lobster tail was a first for us. It did not disappoint. The 8 oz tenderloin was prepared perfectly. The Creme Brulee was heavenly. If we make it back to Beloit, M&H will be our dinner stop.

This was a very disappointing outing for my wife and I. We got sat out in there patio/overflow, which lacks all manor of ambiance one would expect to experience for a romantic diner for two. Had that been communicated when making reservations or it was stated that the patio was open, I would not have made reservations. The food was not worth the price paid. My wife filet was over cooked. My ribeye was Ok. The dinner menu was extremely limited and no options for sauce, toppings, or crusts. We won’t be going back.
