If you have celiac disease or food sensitivities, this is your spot. They proudly told us they transitioned all their fryers to be celiac-safe this year, and their protocols for preventing cross-contamination are excellent.
The service is fantastic; our waitress was well-informed and happy to double-check ingredients with the kitchen. They even caught a corn-based ingredient in my sauce and remade my meal before it hit the table (I avoid corn).
Ordered the Pork Belly Burnt Ends (Omit Kimchi Waffle) and Merchants Burger (GF Bun)
Highly recommended for safe, stress-free dining. We will be eating here again soon!
The only reason for the 4-star rating was the Red Velvet Cheesecake. It tasted delicious, but the amount of artificial red dye used was clearly excessive and caused some pretty alarming (and colorful) digestive issues the next day. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expected a more natural approach to their desserts. Great night, but skip the red velvet!
Our drinks were great (though I thought the mulled wine needed more of the spices as it was a bit subdued in flavor) and our shared starter dish was good. It’s hard to find gluten free arancini and it was a pleasant surprise to find that on the menu.
For our main dishes my partner ordered the gnocchi with short rib and we were excited for her as that is a beautiful rich dish normally. When it arrived there were no gnocchi but sad looking fusilli. When I asked our waitress she acted like it was expected because we ordered the dish to be celiac friendly. She said gnocchi are not gluten free. News to me as I am from Italy and gnocchi can very easily be gluten free; easier than pasta. There’s no warning that we would not get gnocchi, the main feature of the dish! Now 34/36 dollar dish sits uneaten in the fridge. To say it soured our experience would be generous as this is the one opportunity we had to go out and have dinner with friends as we don’t have endless cash to spend to go out to eat.
It would not have been as bad had our waitress not acted like we should have just expected there to not be gnocchi in the gnocchi dish without a prompt from her when we ordered. Another option would have been to offer us something different immediately. I serve as well and that would be one of my first suggestions, to see if my customers would like something different and apologize for them not getting what they wanted. If it was clearly written on the menu that we wouldn’t get gnocchi we wouldn’t have ordered it. Heck even mashed potatoes with the short rib would have been a better option and welcomed. From there we saw a little less from our waitress after that and then we paid the bill and went elsewhere for drinks after.
I do want to state that the gluten free fish and chips were outstanding. Hard to find that anywhere. I even ordered a gluten dish as I’m not a celiac, the Tuscan rigatoni, and it was delicious. Though when you are charging 30+ dollars a dish in the heart of Kansas it would be great if I knew we weren’t getting what we really wanted with the Gnocchi.
The famous Brussels sprouts are a MUST. So tasty, cooked to perfections and glazed and dressed beautifully. We also ordered the tortellini and the sweet potato quinoa burger.
Definitely a favorite on Mass st.
