Came here to work and have lunch to get out of the house for an hour or two, only to be told that I wasn’t allowed to sit at one of the two gigantic open tables or bar and work bc they’re “unplug zones”. I understand fostering connection, but it’s mid-late morning on a Wednesday. Also, there was no where else for me to sit. Mind you, there were people without laptops sitting in the working zones as well. I was planning on brining a group of clients here for a lunch meeting, but this policy is preposterous and now we will be going else where in case one of us needs to open our laptops. As mentioned in a few other reviews, the staff were great and apologetic regarding the policy which is why I’m leaving 2 stars instead of 1.

☕️ Mercantile & Mash is such a cool spot in downtown Charleston. The vibe is chic and laid-back — perfect for catching up with friends or getting some work done. I tried the honey latte and it was amazing — just the right amount of sweetness with smooth, rich espresso.

The space itself has a modern-industrial feel with lots of natural light, and there’s always a nice buzz without being too loud. It’s one of those places where you instantly feel comfortable. Definitely a place I’ll keep coming back to when I’m in the area.

A must-visit in Charleston!

Mercantile and Mash blew me away. From the moment you walk into this beautifully restored historic building, you’re met with a vibe that blends charm and intentional design. There’s plenty of seating, and it’s not just functional. It’s varied and inviting, with spaces perfect for studying, casual meetups, or just kicking back and relaxing. It somehow manages to feel both open and cozy at the same time.

The coffee options are top tier. Thoughtfully crafted and clearly made with care. I had a layered espresso drink that not only tasted amazing but looked gorgeous too. The buffalo chicken sandwich was the real deal. Crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor. The menu overall offers great variety, from smoothies to pastries to hearty breakfast and lunch options.

One of the standout details was the bathroom setup. Multiple individual stalls that are private and super convenient, especially for a busier place like this. That kind of detail really shows they care about the customer experience.

The Mercantile side of the shop is equally impressive. You can browse everything from curated wines to snacks, specialty meats, and gift-worthy local goods. It’s like a high-end market tucked into your favorite café.

Service was excellent. Friendly, helpful staff who kept the line moving without making anything feel rushed. I could’ve hung out here all day.

Charleston is lucky to have this place. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Mercantile and Mash is worth a visit. Every time.

Super cute coffee shop! I appreciate the fact that they have designated areas to use your laptop and make a priority for community/tables to sit and actually talk! It’s a large space and really well decorated. I love that there are some local brands to buy, food and drinks were delicious. Highly recommend!

They have some excellent coffee. I believe they said that they source their dairy products for the coffee locally. They were so good we went a couple times on our stay in Charleston. We didn’t get to try their food but it looks pretty good. Would definitely recommend getting coffee here.

I had heard great things but I won’t be going back. After we had already ordered food and drinks, we were told that they had a laptop free policy for the high-top tables. We waited and moved to a low top table where everyone else was using laptops. After approx 15/20 minutes we were asked to move from the laptop free space while still enjoying our food and drinks. I’m assuming this policy is to cater to out of town/ leisure guests and increase revenue but you should never lose sight of your locals. I won’t go back.

Great spot! I was looking for a coffee shop where I could study and this place was perfect. Lots of space to find a spot to work/study. Added bonus, the food was really good! Burger had pimento cheese, bacon, jam and pickles – it was spot on. The Caesar salad dressing was super light. Will definitely return in the future.

Came here to do some work and to have a coffee and of course was confronted by their new policy of separate unplug zones for laptops users. For everyone that had had my same issue I went to Blum Coffee and not only do they have the space but their prices are reasonable to go there get some work done or meet a client like I had to do. Of course you have to buy a Coffee to be able to use their wifi as they are a Coffee shop as well but in my opinion is the best choice for a similar concept to this. They are not a restaurant so their environment revolves around the concept of getting work done meeting clients in a wide open space. I can also understand how a restaurant would want some of their space as an unplug zone.

My wife and I absolutely love Mercantile and Mash—it’s become an almst weekly tradition for us! Whether it’s grabbing an iced coffee or iced tea (both are fantastic) or indulging in their ever-changing delicious food selections, this spot never disappoints.

The atmosphere is welcoming and laid-back, making it a perfect place for both casual visits and business meetings. As a real estate agent, I often bring clients here to chat over a bite while we explore downtown Charleston properties. The combination of great food, friendly service, and a cool, relaxed vibe makes it an ideal setting for both work and leisure.

If you’re looking for a go-to café in Charleston, Mercantile and Mash is a must-visit. Highly recommend!

Came here saw they now have a lqptop zone? Had a coffee.Left went to Blum Coffee just equally as big had a coffee and pastries fron saffron bakery and met with a client. No laptop designated zones and parking. I understand rent is high but businesses I feel should not forget who keeps their doors open. customer service was friendly, and I do agree with the other reviewers that the staff was embarrassed implementing all these laws and rules and it’s not that serious. 4 stars to keep it more then fair
