We ordered carry out. The wait time was reasonable. The pastrami sandwich was excellent. You can’t tell from my picture but the meat is piled high. Fries were good too. I especially liked the pickles. I highly recommend that you stop by if you are in the area! Update – had lunch there again a few days later. Had The Big Macher. It was pretty awesome. The corned beef was excellent. I hope to be back in the area again someday to try the corned beef sandwich. Big fan of this place!

Finally got to try out my buddy’s place Mensch’s Deli in Evanston today, and it did NOT disappoint! From the moment we walked in, it smelled amazingly delicious! The atmosphere was great with lots of people having lunch in booths and at tables, we loved all the old photos that decorated the walls throughout the dining area. We were greeted, seated, and served with warmth and kindness! Such a wonderful menu with great selections of foods you would expect at such a deli! I asked the owner (and friend ) for his recommendations, and again they did not disappoint!! We ordered the recommend Latke, served with applesauce and sour cream. My wife ordered the BLT with extra crispy bacon served on Challah bread with a variety of pickles on the side: dill, half sour, and a very tart but delicious pickled green tomato!! I ordered the recommended bowl of matzoh ball soup (YUM!!!) with a half Mensch’s pastrami sandwich , with the homemade lemonade . Everything was great, and we can’t wait to return to taste our way through the entire menu!

Fantastic latke- great crunch and came out piping hot. I enjoyed the Bubbe Special, but personally would ask for pastrami instead of corned beef next time for an extra punch of salt. The pickles green tomatoes stood out on the pickle plate.

This was my first time visiting this place, but maybe I just wasn’t lucky that day. I was told that the corned beef sandwich—which seems to be the must-order here—wouldn’t be ready for another one to two hours. I understand that happens, but tracking food availability probably shouldn’t fall on the customer. In the end, I ordered an omelette and a soup, which took about 15 minutes to arrive. That was a bit disappointing, especially since there were only one or two other customers at the time. The omelette was fine, though not particularly well-seasoned in my opinion, and honestly it doesn’t compare to Frida’s. Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to try their corned beef sandwich next time and see if it changes my overall impression of the restaurant.

Matzo ball soup is incredibly tasty. The restaurant is always bustling, the staff are friendly, and it’s a wonderful place! We had a great time there with our little one.

We were surprised to find this relatively new deli very busy on a Wed. in Feb. at 1p. The main dining room was almost full and people were talking and enjoying their fresh deli fare.
My partner ordered the lox scramble and was very happy with it because it seemed fresh and it was a reasonable (not huge, not small) portion. The toasted rye bread was thick and chewy and a satisfying complement to the three scrambled eggs and nova lox salmon.
I chose the scrambled matzo brie and enjoyed it. The portion was just right; not too large, not too small. Three eggs in this one also, and crunchy chunks of matzo. Our waitress forgot to ask what kind of bread I would like with my dish, so I ate one of my partner’s rye slices.
Pickles on request is a good policy so you won’t throw away a lot of uneaten pickles.
The dining room was busy, noisy and friendly. We has some confusion when finding a table and getting a server’s attention. Once we were established, the service was fine and our lunch experience was positive. There seemed to be only two servers for the entire dining room (about 15 tables), so they were scurrying. Also, the tables in the middle of the dining room made
the room feel smaller than it actually is (there is another dining room, so maybe they should remove a few tables here).
If noisy diners create a positive atmosphere, then this place had a very positive vibe. The decor is unmemorable, but most people seem to come here to eat.
Did I mention the large napkins? I lovin’ it!

This is a review for the matzo ball soup which is fabulous! The broth is very flavorful (and not fatty) and the matzo ball is tasty and just the right amount of firmness so that it’s light but not so fluffy that it would fall apart. I ordered it to go and it was a perfect lunch.
Also bought a can of Dr Brown’s Diet Cream soda which hopefully needs no explanation on how perfect that was!

Do NOT get the cheese blintzes. At first I thought it was a mistake & the chef forgot to add cheese, but after checking with the staff & even getting one remade, it truly is just 99% crepe and <1% cheese. Mensch’s - I would either fix this or take it off the menu, disappointing enough to ruin a whole meal
Otherwise latkes are delicious, smoked fish hits the spot, and great old school vibe.

Wish I could give this place more stars. Exactly what Evanston needed. The latkes, chicken soup, and pastrami were delicious. I was especially surprised at how wonderful the pastrami was. Some of the best I have ever had! Gets a bit busy, but rightfully so. Plan to wait for a table. Staff is friendly and overall vibes reminds me of being in New York City. Can’t wait to come back.

A great place with really good food. Service was a bit slow, and the place was loud, but that is to be expected when it’s completely full! Which I love for a new spot in town. Hope it stays full, just don’t expect a quite conversation during Sunday brunch.
