Tender and flavorful is how I’d describe just about everything I had here. Everything was cooked to just the right doneness – the sliced brisket, smoked turkey, and pulled chicken; even the fried okra, collards, green beans, hushpuppies. The meats needed no sauce, but the spicy golden secret and Alabama white were standouts for me. It’s always impressive when a BBQ place does all their different meats and their (many) mostly veggie sides to the same high standard.

Great food and service at a reasonable price. Loved the Double bacon cheese burger (1/2 off Tuesday) and brisket cheese sandwich, but the onion rings are more like a doughnut with a strip of onion – too doughy for me.
Sauces are great! Smoked on-site!

Melvin’s BBQ on James Island delivers solid, classic barbecue with great flavor and consistency. The meats were tender, smoky, and well seasoned definitely the highlight of the visit. You can tell they know their way around traditional Southern BBQ.

Service was friendly and attentive, keeping things moving smoothly and making the experience easy and enjoyable.

The atmosphere is casual and laid-back — comfortable and welcoming, though fairly simple. It’s more about the food than the vibe, which works well for a no-frills BBQ spot.

Overall, a dependable choice for quality barbecue. I’d gladly return when the craving hits.

We were looking for smewhere to get bbq for lunch and we found Melvin’s. As we walked up the fires were going outside and the smell of the smoke hit me right away. I ordered the little joe pulled pork sandwich. I made it a basket which adds fries and a gigantic onion ring. The pork is moist and just slightly flavored with the mustard sauce. That is nice because I could taste the pork. Then I can add more sauce as desired. The onion ring was a thick onion coated in this sweet batter that puffs up really big and golden brown in the Fryer. Delicious!

Melvin’s has hands down the best BBQ around! The flavors are incredible, the meat is always perfectly cooked, and the portion sizes are more than generous. I especially love their burgers and BBQ sandwiches, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. What really makes this place special is the people who keep it running. Everyone who works there is so kind, welcoming, and helpful. You can truly feel that it’s family owned, and that care shows in both the food and the service. I’ll keep coming back again and again!

Born and raised on JI (I’m 46), Melvin’s is a staple. They do a great job with pulled pork, plus the burgers are legit. Hash is decent, plus okra, fries. Whenever we come back to visit family, Melvin’s is ALWAYS one of our must do’s.

Service is outstanding! I had a last-minute urgent need in a catering request, and Margaret went above and beyond to make sure my large order was taken care of. Our food even arrived a little early and was as delicious as always! Thank you, Melvin’s!

We ate here on a short visit to Charleston. I wanted to have some of the barbecue that South Carolins is known for, but kept finding trendy places with pit masters from Texas. Don’t get me wrong! I am from Texas and live in Atlanta, so I love some Texas barbecue. But if I’m in Rome, then I’m not going to eat pizza from New York. I wanted some Lowcountry barbecue with some mustard based sauce. Melvin’s did not disappoint!

My husband and I split the 2 meat plate with pork, brisket, baked beans, fried okra, collard greens, and cornbread (I got an extra side and an extra cornbread). I had to sample all of the sauces. I really enjoyed the mustard sauce, but my husband preferred the southern red sauce. What was realyl impressive was the brisket rub. It had so much flavor, that the sauce was not necessary. It is probably some of the best brisket and rub we have ever had. I will be purchasing some of that rub in the future to use at home.

The baked beans and okra were good. I would say the okra was probably a little squishy, but comparable to many other places. I did like the pickle bar. I love pickles and pickled onions, so I did stop there a few times to pickle up.

The only real cons were minor. We had to clean our own table. They did not seem super busy, but I think that they hadn’t made it out to clean a free table yet. They forgot our cornbread (why it’s not pictured). I had ordered a second piece so that we both had one, but I should not have bothered. It was not very good. The collard greens had some great spice to them! The flavor was fantastic, however, they were way too salty. I love collard greens, and it is hard to get really good ones. I was a little bummed because these had such a good amount of flavor and heat, but the salt was just too heavy.

Overall, I would say this place has some of the best brisket ever. I would definitely come here again if ever in Charleston, and hopefully the collards would be perfect that time.

I purchased a $16 brisket sandwich today, and for the first time it was extremely dried out and tough. I called and spoke with Mindy, the store operator, who informed me that she could not refund the sandwich. I wasn’t asking for a refund — I simply expected a replacement.

I was then told that she would only make me a small sandwich since I had already eaten a small portion. As a manager, a full remake should have been offered. I was also instructed to hold on to the remaining sandwich and bring it back as proof, which I will do.

I have never heard of a restaurant handling a complaint this poorly. You’ve just lost a regular customer

Some of the best BBQ we’ve had anywhere on our travels! We tried the Pit-Master Plate to get a sampling of everything they had to offer. It was WAY more food than two people could every eat, but we had plenty of tasty leftovers for later in the week. Everything was cooked to perfection; I particularly enjoyed the smoked wings (the rub was delicious) and the ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, yet crispy. These guys have some of the best sauces we’ve every had, so we walked away with a gallon of the Sweet Red for home consumption. If you’re ever in the Charleston, SC area, don’t miss this historic gem!
