Just a quick PSA: I went to this establishment recently with my family expecting a nice birthday dinner, only to be hit with a cover charge at the door. This is supposed to be a family-friendly bar and grill, but they were charging just to get in — even for people just coming to eat.
There was no live music, until 9:30 no event, just dinner service.
I’m sharing this so others aren’t caught off guard. If you’re planning to go, especially with kids or just for a meal, you might want to call ahead and ask about any fees.
Hope this helps someone avoid the surprise!
How many of you have gone to a bar and grill and have had to pay for a cover chart to have dinner, and a family, friendly bar and GRILL*******
We went with my aunt ,
We had high hopes for this place, especially since we had been messaging them ahead of time with several important questions. We asked about reservations, hours, live music, the venue, and whether it was kid-friendly—because we were planning a special birthday dinner for our aunt with family, including children.
While they answered most of our questions, they failed to mention that there would be a $5 cover charge per person—even just to come in and eat dinner. We were surprised at the door and told we had to pay $5 each, including for the kids. When we asked about the age cutoff, we were told (after some unclear answers) that it was $5 for anyone 9 and up.
We brought this up to Armando, who claimed it’s all over their social media. Yes, we’ve seen the cover charge mentioned—for the nightclub and live band portion of the night—not for simply dining with family, especially before the nightlife even begins. We weren’t there to party, drink, or stay late. We just wanted to have dinner.
Instead of listening to the feedback, he became defensive and rude, telling my aunt she could leave if she didn’t like it and that we had an “attitude.” He even told the rest of our group they could stay, but that she should leave. That was very disrespectful, especially considering we were just explaining that this information should have been shared when we asked about everything in advance. If they had been transparent about the charges, we would’ve chosen a different place to celebrate.
We ended up leaving and choosing a different restaurant—one that doesn’t charge a fee just to sit down and eat dinner as a family. We went to La Troje on pablo kisel where they accommodated 25 people Without reservations.
Final note: BE AWARE that this place charges $5 per person (ages 9 and up) just to enter—even if you’re only dining.
That info was not clearly communicated and led to a very disappointing experience on what should have been a happy occasion.
JUST HEADS UP EVERYONE
Cover $5, anyone under twenty-one-$20. As you walk in ALL the tables at lower level are reserved. Asked waitress about this, said she didn’t know anything about it, that I needed to ask manager.
She pointed me to manager who was charging at the door. I approached the bearded guy at the door wearing a baseball cap backwards. I asked about the reserved tables and junior immediately became offensive and saying he didn’t know anything about it (see a pattern here).
When I asked him who was the person to talk to about this, he said calm down. At this juncture someone comes up to him and asks about their reservation—he pulls out his flip phone and shows the guy a map of all the tables and says here take these 3, starting here….so apparently he knows nothing about reserved tables yet has them all mapped out.
It appears there is some kind of racket being played with reservations…not sure if junior with baseball cap backwards is charging / selling the reservations but beware of this business.
p.s. Security is top notch—junior who is charging at door just asks you if you have any weapons; glad to see the honor system at work, hope it works. Finally, when a small man wearing a POLICE vest and gun shows up, he applies his security experience to the cash register as he begins to charge. Nice work with security, junior!
Additionally, I had an unpleasant interaction with the bartender, who made visible faces when I asked for another drink—this being my first drink of the night. As a paying customer, this response felt unnecessary and unprofessional.
Overall, the level of customer service has noticeably declined. If Mel’s Honky Tonk took the time to review their customer feedback, they would clearly see that these concerns are recurring. Based on these experiences, I would not recommend this establishment, and it does not meet the standard deserving of a positive rating.
