I went for the first time today, and the man who was running it was the sweetest person. He deserves nice things for how wonderful his customer service was. I ordered mung bean noodles, house spiced shrimp and pan fried dumpling. While I waited for my togo order, I had a loose leaf tea and their pickled veggies. Everything was absolutely delightful, well seasoned and perfectly prepared.

Mela Cafe is a lovely and charming restaurant that serves amazing food. Their selection of Szechuan food caters to all people, and suits both die-hard fans of spice and people who just like a little bit of spice. The lady who served us today was very accommodating and nice, and even gave us complementary food and drinks! 11/10 experience, and is a hidden gem in the mechanicsville area!

My husband and I were looking for a hole in the wall restaurant that we don’t have back home.
We stopped in and we’re blown away. The owner is so personable and kind.
The food was awesome. My husband got the beef soup with house spice and I got the Sichuan style dumplings. Both were so delicious!

My wife and I stopped in for dinner at around 6:15pm on a Saturday. I had read some positive remarks on social media and I love LOVE. good noodle house (not many around RVA…Mr Noodle & Cheng Du out on W. Broad both have some good noodles…for Richmond anyway). Anyways, the entrance and parking lot are very dark and there was no one seated inside and I almost wondered if they were even open. I stepped inside with Melody and we were given an enthusiastic welcome by the owner. Inside it looks a little bare. Not much decor and obvious signs if recently repaired but not yet painted walls and unused food service equipment sort of stand out like a sore thumb in the entranceway. All this to say that’s where anything below outstanding begins and ends. The enthusiasm of the owner and the chef in the back will make you forget all about those small issues spotted at first glance. The menu is very small and focused. It is a noodle house after all. There are perhaps 25 offerings running the gambit from appetizers to soups to entrées. My wife and I chose the scallion pancakes, The pan fried dumplings (that resembled a doughy bao bun), the Dan-Dan noodles, the sichuan noodles and the house spicy beef and noodle soup. It seems like a lot of food and there was definitely some leftover for lunch the next day, But we like to share plates and pass things around in this restaurant dishes are primarily small plates designed for that specific process. We also ordered the green tea and water (There is no ABC license). The tea was outstanding. Real tea leaves typing in water, no tea bags here! Dishes came out in pairs or threes. Everything perfectly seasoned and spicy with condiments on each table to address things up to your taste. I highly recommend the pancakes to start. They were crispy and came with a delightful dipping sauce. We also polished off the Sichuan dumplings that were in a delicious chili sauce. We were the only people in the dining room And the chef and owner were both delighted to have us. We never saw a single person coming in for dinner or takeout during the hour or so That we were there. But again back to the food as that will be the reason you go back again and again. I would not recommend this kind of food as a to go order As it would not travel well in my opinion. These kinds of dishes are best served and consumed immediately! The pan fried dumplings again were slightly *doughier* than a Bao Bun and were filled with a delicious pork and vegetable filling. The dan-dan noodles are served cold But we’re absolutely delicious although the noodles looked Like store-bought spaghetti. They are also served in a chili sauce with some filing, minced pork and other spices. Finally, the House spicy beef noodle soup was sort of a mix between a Pho and a bowl of Ramen. The beef was so tender it literally melted in your mouth. It was accompanied with some Onions and baby bok choy. The entire bill was just over $50 before Gratuity. And encourage everyone to go have a visit and don’t Judge the book by its cover. You’ll have a fantastic time with a very enthusiastic team Working to bring you an excellent dining experience. Have a great time and tell your friends this guy could use Local support!

I’m at a loss as to how to even review this restaurant. We came during operating hours and found a handwritten note on the door stating that someone will return within 20 minutes and to call the number if needed. We stood outside for a bit while a face kept peering out from behind curtains at the massage place next door. We decide to call the number as it had been almost 20 minutes. No answer. The masseuse from next door must have seen us, comes out, and calls a number which must have been the owner’s personal cell, because he answered right away and said he’d be right there.

The owner comes to open the place and we are seated as the only customers. Interesting that there is no public restroom. Not sure how it passes code, but anyways…we order and are graciously given complimentary peanuts and pickled vegetables. While waiting, all we hear from the kitchen is the microwave beeping the entire time the meal was being prepared. The owner is the only person serving us and cooking. We ordered the mung bean jelly noodles, chicken noodle soup, scallion pancakes, and the beef noodles. Surprisingly given all the microwave beeps, everything tasted pretty good with the exception of the over fried scallion pancakes which, if prepared correctly, would be identical in every way to the packaged frozen ones sold at Lotte.

The owner is very kind and we proceed to converse. We find out that the actual chef is in China for an extended period of time. Ah, this explains all the microwaving. The owner is the only one running the whole place in the meantime, hence the issue with the restaurant not being truly open during operating hours. At the end of the meal, he offers complimentary oranges. I give him props for doing this one man show.

Given all the unusual quirks of this place, the fact that the food was better than some other Chinese places around and wasn’t even cooked by an actual chef entices me to come back when the expert is actually in the house.

This was hands down the BEST savory Asian food I’ve ever had. I had the Mung Bean Jelly Noodles, which arrived and did NOT look like something I would enjoy….. THEY WERE AMAZING!!! I could’ve sat there and ordered bowl after bowl of them of them. My wife had the Cold Sesame Noodles and loved them, so did our toddler.

The lady running the restaurant was the sweetest ever! She played with our little girl and took great care of us. We couldn’t have asked for better service. We might file to adopt her, she was awesome.

We had the restaurant to ourselves, so it was as quiet as it could be with our toddler. I’ll definitely be back! Do not let the low key look and understated atmosphere throw you off, the food is fantastic! This lady NEEDS to start a franchise.

This place was outstanding, the owner was very welcoming and we conversated for a bit. I had the beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes and sesame noodles and they were all great. Soup was spicy but even the most novice spice user can take that heat. The beef was super tender. The scallion pancake was flakey and not too thick and the sesame were amazing and the sauce on them was very flavorful. I am definitely going back again.

Real-deal Sichuan cuisine. I tasted the Beef Noodle Soup (I got the spicy version–it’s quite spicy and intensely flavorful, with some of the most tender chunks of beef I’ve ever had in a soup), Mung Bean Jelly Noodles, Sichuan-style Dumplings, and Cold Sesame Noodles. Everything was perfectly seasoned and delicious. I recommend sharing several small dishes so you can see what this cuisine is all about. Well worth the short drive from downtown Richmond. The menu is very straightforward and well-rounded. There were plenty of tables available when we came in on a Saturday afternoon, though I anticipate they will begin to fill up soon as more people discover this delicious food. The people there are very kind and friendly. Looking forward to coming back soon.
