The food and cocktails at Mejicali are delicious and visually appealing. The service was fast, the atmosphere was great, and when the weather is nice, they even have a fun patio with a playground for kids. I enjoyed the easy way of opening a tab and ordering additional items throughout the evening simply by scanning a QR code at the table. I’ll definitely be visiting Mejicali again!

The highlights of this place were definitely Damian and Mederio, along with the food and drinks. Unfortunately, our overall impression of the vibe wasn’t great…twice. The first time, we walked in and the place was so silent and empty that I thought they were closed. The second time, a waitress accidentally spilled a full drink on me, completely ruining my hair and outfit.
That said, both times they went out of their way to ask what music we wanted to hear, checked in often to make sure we were enjoying our food and drinks, and treated us with genuine friendliness. I understand what others mean about the service being hit-or-miss, but Damian and Mederio were outstanding and truly made up for the negatives.

Wow! Super cool fun atmosphere. You can park in the parking lot for free. We didn’t know at first but you can. The first driveway take a left then another left towards the back. You are basically in the back of the building from there. Stairs to the gorgeous patio.

We went around 11:15am and ot 20⁰ outside and it felt like 40⁰ inside after being in there for about 20min. The food was decent, the staff wasn’t very engaging and ordering was vis QR code. It was low energy. Thought it would’ve been better my 2nd visit, as my 1st visit wasn’t any better. Was there on a Friday evening with about 20-25 patrons. Stood at the bar waiting to order for a good 10 minutes even after the female bartender saw us walk up. She didn’t greet us and say I’ll be with shortly or anything of that nature to acknowledge new patrons. She just walked away and kept doing other things talk to other patrons at the bar. When I went to the other end of the bar a male bartender acknowledge me and took my order as he was making drinks for other patrons then she wanted to walk up and ask about my order. It was too late for me with her, 1st impression was made.

I have eaten at a ton of Mexican, Tex-Mex, Southwest type foods all over the country and most of them in the Southwest. I have had none that would come close to rivaling the unbelievably amazing taste of Mejicali. The flavor and quality of ingredients was absolutely amazing!

This place was recommended to us but missed the mark. There was one server taking care of the whole place. We never got our appetizer until we asked an hour later where it was. Didn’t put our order in for like over an hour and only bc we stopped someone to ask if we can order. Food was mediocre. They need to hire more staff it doesnt seem like they are hurting for money.

Very good food! You order at the table with a QR code, and the food comes to your table soo quickly. Birria Rollitos and margarita were especially delicious. This place has a very chill vibe and is very family friendly. A great addition to the Charlottesville Main Street neighborhood.

The food was okay. That’s the best I can say. The service staff doesn’t interact with you more than bringing your plate to the table. They merely point-out a QR code for ordering food. Staff makes no/little effort to engage with you. – Don’t know if they paid their electric bill, because it felt only a few degrees warmer than the 25-degrees outside. The staff was wearing coats and scarves to stay warm.– Feels like yet another place that’ll fail in under a year.

I love Charlottesville. But I am often uninspired by the abundance of mediocre food options with few standouts. That’s why I was so pleased to find Mejicali. The owner, John, has a vision and passion for his food. And it comes across on every dish. From the birria served on a skewer and carved onto fresh tortillas to the crispy mayo taco with house made garlic cilantro sauce. Finally cville is giving me some flavor bombs I long for. And frankly undercharging for it (translation great prices). Well worth it. One word – GO!
