Passed by this place a few times on my various walks around Amsterdam, and with only a handful of restaurants left in the city I decided to cross this one off my list.
Ordered over the phone for dinner which starts at 5:00PM but they let you call in up to 1 hour prior to put in take out orders, going with the Truffle Parmesan Fries and the “Phil” but substituting out the side of fries with whipped sweet potatoes. Altogether coming to halfway under $32, though I’d honestly say it was more of a $27 meal which we’ll get to why soon.
Arrived nearby and after a little confusion I was able to find the main entrance thanks to the cheerful receptionists, who were very polite and super happy. Very nice girls, sweet as sugar.
Back home I dug into my dishes, which were split up into 3 containers. The burger was first and wow, that thing was stupendous. The burger was cooked just right, juicy and savory, the cheese cut like a knife it was so sharp, and that pepper jam swept me away into the garlic aioli. So good. The whipped sweet potatoes were next and by golly did they give me a heaping serving of the stuff, but I think it needed a bit more seasoning. More spice, like a cinnamon sprinkling with a dash of nutmeg. As it stands, the potatoes were very plain and uninspiring. And lastly the fries, and, well, they were cold, they were oily, and the parmesan did not taste fresh at all. Pretty sure they sprinkled that right out of the green can of Kraft. I don’t have much of a drive to get back home, so these fries must have been prepared first before anything else. Might be better in restaurant, by not for me sadly.
Overall, I would totally come back for another Phil, or one of their other named dishes, but I’ll skip the truffle fries and sweet potatoes next time. Still, given the service, I’ll keep things at a full 5 stars since google doesn’t do half points.
Meg and her team definitely focus
on customer service and fine food.
I highly recommend a lunch or dinner.
The experience is wonderful!
