Social Profile:

We are the oldest restaurant in Cincinnati and have been serving beer and food lovers since 1865. We pride ourselves on our extensive German tap list, but you can also find a good selection of imports, craft, cocktails, and wine. Our menu consists of classic German and American fare, with several vegetarian and pescatarian options. We have a beautiful outside Biergarten (which is ranked as one of the best in the nation), and a cozy Bavarian-style dining room and bar area inside. We really are a one-of-a-kind experience in the city, so we hope you will visit us soon!

Traditional German dishes served in a historic, Bavarian-style setting with a beer garden.

There was a time that this restaurant was awesome. German beers, schnitzels, amazing cabbage…but this is today and the experience is, at best, marginal. I hate to review this restaurant as such as I want it to succeed, but the menu is an eviscerated shell of its former self. Our server was kind of indifferent to almost everything. We asked for a couple of different beers–both of which were out–to which she said, “we’re all out” and then handed us a hand written note of what was available. The place’s ambiance is still on point, a vestige of a time when service was valued, but it adds a depressive air to it all. You’re eating in the ruins of Ancient Rome. At one time, this place was amazing but now we are in the dark ages. I imagine it’s just a post-COVID thing but it’s very sad for a Cincinnati staple since the 1880s. Oh how I long for the past. Eat at your own risk. 🙁 Auf Wiedersehen , old Mecklenberg.

Food was pretty okay, could definitely tell it was German. Hoooowever, I’m not sure if we came on a bad day, but we ended up waiting 2.5 hours to get our food, and it was cold. We had to go up and ask the front bar 4 times before we finally got a waiter to come out and get our orders. The outside garden is kinda cool, but overall it was a pretty terrible experience. I would go again, but only if I knew I was going to get served in a reasonable amount of time.

We were looking for a unique place to eat while in Cincinnati and found this place. It has an old world charm, very good service and the food was very good. I didn’t give the food a 5 because the food wasn’t great but still very good. My husband and I both had the schnitzel($23),we both thought it was a little overcooked but the sauce was great and my kids thoroughly enjoyed their meals. It had some good very beer choices also.

Saturday Morning Mustard Club, 2nd Saturday every month, has a great German food buffet including goetta sausage which is my favorite. Can’t beat the atmosphere too. Beautiful outdoor garden seating area.

They must’ve been having a bad day this day. I’m sure, by the way the older gentleman talked and interacted with guests, they probably are very attentive. Maybe, because we were new there, that’s why we didn’t get as much attentive service. I refrain from details. I’m sure they would remember us, if we ever decided to dine there again. We were seated quickly though. The food was cold, but good. So, that’s the plus side. I will say this, if our waitress paid as much attention to her service to us as she did when she thought we didn’t pay, and ran out after us yelling, “hey! you didn’t pay”, her tip would have been better. We actually debated on her tip because my company felt like she did not want to serve us. Looking back, yes, now I agree with them. I do not need to go into detail it would take too long. This is long enough.

We were a large party of 16 ppl and our waiter worked alone. She should be commended for keeping her cool, no mistakes and was so pleasant. The food was fantastic but took FOREVER to get to our table (at least 1 hour). Still a great restaurant but be prepared to wait

We came here about 7 years ago for the New Year’s buffet and it was divine. Came back today 7/22 and it’s a shell of what it used to be. Hostess said there was a 40 minute wait despite empty tables everywhere (5:45p on a Saturday night). We were seated in a booth by the main entrance and NOBODY ever approached us after the hostess brought our waters. We overheard other tables being told half the food they ordered was out or no longer available. I drank my liter of Dunkle that I went up and got myself and we left… cannot stress enough how great this establishment used to be and how terrible they are being run now.

Absolutely fantastic! Try the Mecklenburg pie with the Weizendoppelbock…an amazing pairing. Nick was fantastic as our server. We will definitely return.

Came here for dinner on a Wednesday. It was pretty slow, and got seated straight away. The server was outstanding, being the perfect balance of attentive and unobtrusive. Very nice selection of beers, mostly German, of course. The menu was quite limited, but still sufficient. Got the pretzel from the appetizer list, and it was fantastic! Largest pretzel I’ve ever seen. Came with beer cheese and mustard, which was nice to have and go back and forth between the two. The fish and chips were pretty good. Pretty generous portions, and I couldn’t finish it all. The reuben was really good, too. Overall, it was a bit spendy, but worth it to sit in the oldest restaurant in Cinci. The history there is pretty incredible. Definitely worth the trip!

It was a fantastic German meal, my Schweinshaxe fell off the bone and the Schnitzel was devine. Did I mention there was Stiegl on tap!
