Went as part of a private party with a reserved area which was a really good size for the number of guests. A great selection of drinks and food. I had the blue cheese buffalo fries made vegetarian which were really tasty; though I would have like the fries to have been hotter. If visiting again, I’d love to try the burgers and hard shakes. The staff are really helpful and the place looks really fun.

Great burger spot just a short walk from the hotel!
I just arrived in Portsmouth today from the U.S. and was looking for a good place to grab a bite after a long flight. I stumbled upon Meat & Barrel while searching nearby spots and was instantly drawn in by their website — had that classic South Florida burger joint vibe.
Only a quick 3-minute walk from my hotel, which was perfect. I ordered the Buffalo Mac and the Bacon Double Cheeseburger with a drink. Food came out in about 15 minutes and looked amazing — especially excited to see crispy American-style bacon on the burger!
The Buffalo Mac was decent — nice crispy top and tender chicken chunks, but the cheese sauce was a little too runny for my taste. Still enjoyable, just not as rich as I was hoping.
The burger, though? Absolutely hit the spot. The burnt onion mayo and crispy bacon combo was full of flavor — really well done.
One of the hardest things about traveling is adjusting your expectations, but I genuinely enjoyed this place. Seems like a great spot to hang out on weekends too. I didn’t get to try the beer or milkshakes this time, but I’ll be back. Bonus points for being family-owned — love to see it!

Just popped in for a light bite as the kids wanted chicken tenders and they are excellent here. They both had the combos and were very happy. Dog friendly too so what’s not to love.

EXCEPTIONAL place. I came in for food and a beer and my experience was closer to viagra. The service was welcoming, and friendly. As a chef it’s nice to go and eat elsewhere and it’s very hard to find a simple pleasure like Mac and cheese done well. This Mac n cheese was something that should be written in holy scripture. I went for the Mac daddy, and it was a party in my mouth. The portion was very generous and I had to take it home (cant waste that heaven) really cool vibe, excellently paired with very good music that was bang on my taste. 10/10 will be back with friends.

Moved to Portsmouth for work, had a great weekend exploring. Found this beaut of a place, great beers and drinks in general, love the atmosphere and the friendly staff but the food … The pancake stack was incredible, legit the best pancakes I’ve had to date! So I genuinely cannot wait for visit here again!
Located near the end of a lovely little street just through the high street, great bars and overall a lovely vibe. To s if seating indoors and out, really tidy and colourful.
Partner got the salad and a smoothie which she loved!

Went as 1 of a party of 7 (5 being visually impaired). It was well lit with plenty of seating but also plenty of space between the tables. Staff were really helpful and friendly (always helps!). Choice of drinks and food was great and pricing was very fair.

We would like to extend our sincerest appreciation for the reservation for Retirement drinks on Friday 7th November from 16.00. Thank for accommodating us. The Retiree and myself enjoy coming to Meat and Barrel on a regular basis to sample the different beers you have on offer and wanted others to participate and enjoy the excellent array of drinks you have available. Please can you convey our appreciation and thanks to the staff on shift. They were all fantastic and all worked their socks off to accommodate and serve the crowd who came along. I know the Retiree is extremely popular and that showed in the number who attended. I hope we were not too much trouble for you. I did check in with a few members of staff whilst I was there to ensure all was well with us. As always it is an excellent experience to come to the Meat and Barrel and we wish you good business for many many years to come. Thank you all once again. Best wishes to you all.
