My family had never been to McGrath’s. We chose to visit McGrath’s in Salem, Oregon where we reside.
We have been planning for months to go. My brother came down New Year’s day from Washington state. My spouse, my brother, his wife, and I all went out for New Year’s Day dinner at this restaurant. The menu looked very good online.
We waited over an hour to be served. That was okay. It was New Year’s day 5 pm evening right? There weren’t a lot of people. Though our waitress came fairly swiftly, it was an hour to an hour and a half for dinner to be served.
The restaurant was really cute.
My spouse knew something was wrong when having the crab stuffed mushrooms they just didn’t taste right. We had no desire to mention it to our waitress or the manager however because it could have been a fluke. The salads were very good. Excellent quality greens with beautiful flavor.
We all ordered our food. My spouse had the seafood saute… What came was soaked literally in about a half inch of grease all over the plate. The rice pilaf served with it was full of very hard rice. The same happened with my brother. My brother ordered the halibut with rice pilaf. The halibut was so thin. It was like being served an inexpensive piece of cod.
Halibut is usually nice and thick. For the price paid, you would think there would be a nice serving of halibut. My brother ate his and left his rice pilaf because of all the hard kernels. So I never got to take a photo of his meal.
I never order meatloaf but decided to that evening. When it came it was very burnt everywhere and extremely dry. My spouse and I were unable to eat our food. We are not complainers. This was so far out of the ordinary for us. We had to say something however, as this was just way over the top. Unacceptable. We told our waitress and she understood, was very kind, and got the manager. The manager refunded the meal of my spouse and myself.
The other two we paid for even though they were far less than what they should have been. We were appreciative that at least two were refunded. We would have preferred to just have a beautiful meal together. My family was looking so forward to a very nice seafood meal .The bill was hefty even after refunding the two meals. We had ordered hors d’oeuvres of course. The coconut shrimp felt like jelly in the mouths of those who ate it. I do not eat shrimp so did not partake.
The experience was so disagreeable with the food, that we will never ever be back.
This was over a $200 bill with tip.
Update Update
I recently visited McGrath’s Fish House for the second time and ordered the “All You Can Eat” fisherman platter, which included fried fish, fried shrimp, fried scallops, and french fries. After finishing my first serving, I asked for a refill. The server was very polite and asked which items I wanted. I requested fish, shrimp, and scallops. Later, she brought out a serving of fish with fries and explained that orders are served one at a time. When I pointed out that fish and fries are two items, she said the shrimp and scallops would follow after I finished the fish. I’m confused why I have to wait for subsequent items instead of receiving them all at once. This approach feels like a tactic to limit how much one can eat, which I believe is misleading advertising.
You can’t go back and get that day back. They don’t put any kind of spoons at all on the table. And yet they hand you a bowl of coleslaw that’s very liquidy. It was all just gross gross.!!!
Yeah, the service was so bad!! So disappointed
