This was a $200 + tip meal:

My family had never been to McGrath’s. We chose to visit McGrath’s in Salem, Oregon where we reside.
We have been planning for months to go. My brother came down New Year’s day from Washington state. My spouse, my brother, his wife, and I all went out for New Year’s Day dinner at this restaurant. The menu looked very good online.

We waited over an hour to be served. That was okay. It was New Year’s day 5 pm evening right? There weren’t a lot of people. Though our waitress came fairly swiftly, it was an hour to an hour and a half for dinner to be served.
The restaurant was really cute.

My spouse knew something was wrong when having the crab stuffed mushrooms they just didn’t taste right. We had no desire to mention it to our waitress or the manager however because it could have been a fluke. The salads were very good. Excellent quality greens with beautiful flavor.
We all ordered our food. My spouse had the seafood saute… What came was soaked literally in about a half inch of grease all over the plate. The rice pilaf served with it was full of very hard rice. The same happened with my brother. My brother ordered the halibut with rice pilaf. The halibut was so thin. It was like being served an inexpensive piece of cod.

Halibut is usually nice and thick. For the price paid, you would think there would be a nice serving of halibut. My brother ate his and left his rice pilaf because of all the hard kernels. So I never got to take a photo of his meal.

I never order meatloaf but decided to that evening. When it came it was very burnt everywhere and extremely dry. My spouse and I were unable to eat our food. We are not complainers. This was so far out of the ordinary for us. We had to say something however, as this was just way over the top. Unacceptable. We told our waitress and she understood, was very kind, and got the manager. The manager refunded the meal of my spouse and myself.
The other two we paid for even though they were far less than what they should have been. We were appreciative that at least two were refunded. We would have preferred to just have a beautiful meal together. My family was looking so forward to a very nice seafood meal .The bill was hefty even after refunding the two meals. We had ordered hors d’oeuvres of course. The coconut shrimp felt like jelly in the mouths of those who ate it. I do not eat shrimp so did not partake.
The experience was so disagreeable with the food, that we will never ever be back.
This was over a $200 bill with tip.

It used to be a great spot with excellent food , but lately, the food quality has gone down, and the prices have increased . On a positive note, the service has remained good .

Update Update

I recently visited McGrath’s Fish House for the second time and ordered the “All You Can Eat” fisherman platter, which included fried fish, fried shrimp, fried scallops, and french fries. After finishing my first serving, I asked for a refill. The server was very polite and asked which items I wanted. I requested fish, shrimp, and scallops. Later, she brought out a serving of fish with fries and explained that orders are served one at a time. When I pointed out that fish and fries are two items, she said the shrimp and scallops would follow after I finished the fish. I’m confused why I have to wait for subsequent items instead of receiving them all at once. This approach feels like a tactic to limit how much one can eat, which I believe is misleading advertising.

It was a quiet Friday night, but the service was excellent and food was great. I’m looking forward to returning and trying another new dish!

My server was Marili, and let me tell you, the service was almost as unmatched as the price for a 4 course meal. Steak cooked as asked, crab fresh and quite the variety from the appetizer. Highly recommend the rusty bag pipe to wrap it all up.

We had an excellent dinner here. The fries were light and crispy with a savory flavor, but not too salty. Fried fish was crispy and the bacon avocado burger was wonderful. The service was fast and friendly. Prices aren’t unreasonable for seafood. Altogether great experience.

First time here. I didn’t take photos of the food but it had a good visual appearance. The starter salad was very good. I had the alfredo with shrimp and clams. My friend had the halibut fish and chip platter. Got a taste and it was very good. Service was very slow. Never got checked on if our food was good or if we needed anything else.

We sat in the bar area at the raised booths. The atmosphere was clean and cheerful with dark wood and metal accents. The tables in this area sit up a little higher which is nice for taller people. We asked for ice water with lemon slices and we’re also served with some fresh garlic sourdough bread and butter. Loved the bread! The bread itself was very aromatic and flavorful, the crust was not crumbly but deliciously chewy. We ordered a fish sandwich (which we shared between the two of us) and the appetizer tray which came with two of each of the following, chicken strips, mozzarella sticks, fried zucchini and onion rings. The chicken strips were very tasty with a nice crunchy coating. This appetizer tray also came with three different kinds of sauces. In addition we had two garden salads. Everything was fresh, hot and tasty. Are waitress also brought us an additional basket of the fresh garlic sourdough bread. The garden salads were actually larger than we had anticipated so we probably could have gotten by without the fish sandwich. We were very satisfied and felt that the stop was a real treat. The total order came to $40 including a $6 tip for our waitress who was very attentive to our needs.

Expensive and bad place. From the attention of his waiters when he noticed that I am not white was to send us to the darkest table and in the corner with the whole place free. I asked for a recommendation of their dishes and the only thing they suggested was battered or empanzada food. They took a long time to bring the drinks and to request attention you had to be fishing for the waiters. Note that the best places in the salons were for white people or güeros. The place is nice but my experience was rude, uncomfortable and impolite.

Ordered the seafood combo. Was very dissapointed. Clams were burnt to way past edible. Scallops were tough and nasty. Fish was underdone and swimming in oil. The service was horrible. Mentioned my displeasure to the server. He also never checked on drinks. Very disappointing. Don’t think I’ll visit this establishment in the future.

It was our 28th wedding anniversary. I really thought this would be a good place to go to We love fish and any kind of seafood. The food was so greasy and the potato skins you could tell were baked at least a few days ago. They were gross. This was supposed to be a special night.
You can’t go back and get that day back. They don’t put any kind of spoons at all on the table. And yet they hand you a bowl of coleslaw that’s very liquidy. It was all just gross gross.!!!
Yeah, the service was so bad!! So disappointed
