The historic tavern is located in Midtown Village near Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Convention Center and hotels. It opened in 1860, the year Lincoln was elected and there’s a reason it’s lasted more than 150 years!

It’s a little tricky to find at first since you enter through an alley, but that just adds to the charm. The bar has been there so long the city grew up around it, and once you step inside you can feel the history.
We stopped in for lunch and started with the fried Brussels sprouts, one of their specialties. I would never normally order Brussels sprouts, but I’m so glad I did here—they were crispy, flavorful, and excellent. I had the open-faced roast beef sandwich, which was classic, hearty, and done right. My wife had the shepherd’s pie, which was comforting and filling, exactly what you want in a place like this.
We also had a couple of craft beers, and even with that, the bill was shockingly reasonable—about what you’d pay at a fast-food restaurant. For the quality of the food, the beer selection, and the atmosphere, it’s an incredible value.
McGillin’s Olde Ale House is authentic, welcoming, and timeless. I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you’re in Philadelphia, this is a must-stop.
Operating since 1860. They have a very good comforting food. We had meatloaf and fish and chips along with margarita.
Food was been served on time. Vibe is great!
