There’s a reason McGillin’s Olde Ale House has been around since 1860. Places don’t survive that long unless they’re doing something very right, and this one absolutely is.

It’s a little tricky to find at first since you enter through an alley, but that just adds to the charm. The bar has been there so long the city grew up around it, and once you step inside you can feel the history.

We stopped in for lunch and started with the fried Brussels sprouts, one of their specialties. I would never normally order Brussels sprouts, but I’m so glad I did here—they were crispy, flavorful, and excellent. I had the open-faced roast beef sandwich, which was classic, hearty, and done right. My wife had the shepherd’s pie, which was comforting and filling, exactly what you want in a place like this.

We also had a couple of craft beers, and even with that, the bill was shockingly reasonable—about what you’d pay at a fast-food restaurant. For the quality of the food, the beer selection, and the atmosphere, it’s an incredible value.

McGillin’s Olde Ale House is authentic, welcoming, and timeless. I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you’re in Philadelphia, this is a must-stop.

Charming bar that everyone loves. The Christmas decorations were so cute and beautiful. The oldest bar with the best service. The fish and chips were so good. I had an egg nog martini that was amazing. You need to visit here, if for nothing else the charm and atmosphere.

My husband and I came here yesterday for lunch before going over to Christmas Village (he has been before but this was my first time). From walking in to leaving, the staff was PHENOMENAL. The atmosphere was incredible and the food was DELICIOUS. Our server, Hannah, was such a sweetheart and really took care of us. I found a little piece of metal in my chili and my husband let management know. The manager (I did not get her name. Shorter lady with dark hair) came over and talked to us and apologized to us for that happening. We wanted to just let them know, and not get anything out of it, but they went above and beyond and took care of it. They comped our drinks and our 2 chilis, which was so sweet but totally unnecessary. We will absolutely be back and hope to have Hannah as our server again.

First time there and it was a great time! The drink menu for the auto show was top notch. The bloody mary’s are to die for. The food came out hot and fresh. We got the fish and chips, Reuben with corned beef, and 10 wings. Bought hats to show support for a great place. Will definitely be back!

Always a fantastic vibe at McGillin’s! The place is always crowded so consider yourself lucky to score a table. The wings are crispy and delicious, plus the drinks are always great. The place is straight out of a movie during Christmas season with all their fantastic decorations!

Great relaxed environment. Feels like a local neighborhood bar on the middle of the city. Best happy hour and great value as an event space for retirement or birthday parties etc. Service is great. Staff is friendly and fun. Drinks well made with tasty food. The price is also right! Very good compared to the other city bars & restaurants.

Crazy busy! Tables are first come first serve. Servers are pro’s and move food fast. Very loud but a super cool spot with lots of history.
