So here’s the deal. I’ve been living in Artesia, New Mexico for at least 6 months. In that time, my sidekick and I have been on a noble quest—just trying to get a simple iced coffee from McDonald’s. Regular iced coffee. Maybe vanilla iced coffee. We’re not asking for Starbucks-level sorcery. Just something drinkable.
But somehow, at both McDonald’s in Artesia, they just can’t crack the code. Every cup is a surprise party, and I’m not talking the good kind:
• Sometimes it’s so bitter it feels like I’m being personally attacked by the coffee beans.
• Sometimes it’s so watered down, I start checking if they just handed me melted ice in a cup.
• Hardly any ice—I swear the ice rationing in these cups makes me wonder if there’s a secret ice shortage no one told us about.
• And the vanilla? Ha. I think they wave the vanilla bottle near the cup for good luck.
After all these months—months!—you’d think we’d be regulars they recognize: “Ah yes, the iced coffee adventurers! Let’s finally get this right!” But no. It’s like every time they’re trying to figure out what iced coffee even is.
And yes, we tried Roswell McDonald’s too. Thought maybe the aliens had taught them some coffee secrets. Nope. Same bitter, watery, ice-deficient mystery in a cup.
At this point, I’m convinced it’s a New Mexico McDonald’s thing. Maybe there’s a secret employee handbook: “When making iced coffee, aim for confusion. Keep the humans guessing. Never use too much ice.”
Some stars for the laughs we’ve had. 1 star for the coffee itself. If you want consistency, flavor, and actual ice, bring your own. Or better yet, invest in your own coffee machine—at least it won’t betray you.
