Great Irish Bar! Just the right atmosphere and decor. Great service, good food, reasonably priced. Parking garage across the street.

If I could give this place a zero, I would. My friend and I (two females) went there on a Saturday night – she got there at 5pm, I got there at 5:20pm. Our waitress seemed okay at first but things quickly got extremely disrespectful and weird afterwards. We ordered a drink each, two entrees, and two appetizers. While we’re enjoying our time and catching up, the waitress drops off our check at 6:33pm (no problem – we weren’t planning on ordering anything else BUT WE WERE STILL EATING/DRINKING). We put our cards in so she can take them (again not thinking anything of it since we figured she just wanted to close us out). About 10 mins pass (we’re done with our food at this point) and she clears the table – no issues here. 5 mins later she comes back and takes our waters? At that point my friend and I are like… Uh…
She comes back again 5 mins later and tells us we need to wrap up soon because she needs our table for other guests… Excuse me?! We weren’t planning on leaving so soon, but after her approach/comment we didn’t want to be there anymore anyway so I call my Uber which was 7 minutes away. Then she comes back AGAIN to tell us we have been here well over two hours, closed out, and she wants her table rotated. First of all that wasn’t even true. I clocked the time when she came to say that – it was 6:44pm. Only 1 hour and 24 mins since I got there. I didn’t realize there was a time limit on how long you could sit and enjoy your evening at a table. Whatever. We tell her we’re just waiting for my Uber which is now 6 mins away and she says no we cannot stay at the table and to get up. My friend and I were just in shock. I have never had this happen to me.. EVER! Not wanting to cause a scene, we reluctantly get up and now we’re standing in the doorway awkwardly waiting for my Uber. Mind you, all over patrons around us are staring probably wondering if we did something wrong. So humiliating smh. Also, the food was not good. Cheap, bar style food. But the experience was the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced. Don’t go here.

My friend and I came here for food and drinks. The burger and cheesesteak spring rolls were good. Simple bar food done well. At first I really enjoyed the atmosphere and service from all of the staff. My waitress Caitlyn wasn’t attentive but hey we all have our days. I started to think this could be my new go to spot. Unfortunately, right after we paid Caitlyn asked us to leave because we’d been there over 2 hours and we needed to leave. We’d only been there an hour and a half. My friend was still finishing her drink however; why stay where you aren’t wanted? My friend called her uber and Caitlyn came back over 1 min later to tell us we needed to leave immediately. RUDE but ok. We asked if we could stay seated until the uber arrived in 5 minutes since it’s 8 degrees outside, her response was “no you’ve been here over two hours. You cannot sit here another 5min. You need to leave so myself and others can do our job.”

This was EXTREMELY rude and embarrassing. I understand asking us to gather at the bar in order to flip the table but asking us to leave is harsh and unprofessional especially when we only needed 5 more min. I would’ve happily ordered another drink at the bar so my friend could’ve finished her drink but no we were asked to leave. I’ve never had this happen before. I hope Caitlyn is trained to handle situations like this more appropriately.

There were also a few people who entered when I did who were still happily seated at their tables when we left.

And for anyone wondering… yes, I am a person of color. And yes, I’ve waited tables at a busy restaurant.

Here’s the thing. When you give “regular customers” preferential treatment at the expense of newer customers (who potentially will become “regulars”) then you’ll simply lose business over time. And that’s what happened last night.

When a customer makes a reservation and arrives on time, the manager shouldn’t give away the reserved table to another couple who happens to walk in ahead of them, just because they might be “regulars”. But last night upon our arrival, this was our customer experience. I walked over, saw the table had a Reserved card with my name on it, and looked at the manager and said “I believe this is our table – I have a reservation.” He chose to not acknowledge me at all me and seat the other couple. (Note: we were precisely on time for our reservation!)

Turning to the hostess I informed her we were there for our reservation and she looked horrified when she saw the manager seating the other couple. We saw her discuss this with him but were left to wait at least 15 more minutes while others were seated for later reservation times. In the end, we got seated, but the entire experience was soured by the manager’s decision to give preferential treatment to non-reservation customers he knew, and not acknowledge me or my reservation because he didn’t recognize me. (At a minimum he could have said SOMETHING to acknowledge me and not leave the poor hostess with the mess he created.)

As a result, not only did you lose my family’s business (yes, we are repeat customers) but you lost the potential ongoing business of my guest and her family — new Lower Merion residents who just moved to town, who I had hoped to welcome to the neighborhood by showing them a fun, local establishment.

⭐ 1/5 – Disrespectful and deeply uncomfortable experience

I rarely leave reviews, but my experience at McCloskey’s Tavern was bad enough that I feel obligated to warn others.

From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt hostile and unwelcoming. The staff was rude, dismissive, and openly disrespectful. I was spoken to in a condescending tone, ignored when asking basic questions, and treated very differently from other patrons around me. It was impossible not to notice the contrast in how I was handled versus others.

What should have been a casual meal turned into an uncomfortable and embarrassing experience. I left feeling disrespected and genuinely unwelcome. No customer should walk out of a restaurant feeling singled out or devalued.

Between the poor service, lack of professionalism, and the overall negative energy, I will absolutely never return. There are far too many places that treat people with basic courtesy and respect to waste time or money here.

Do better.

First, it’s a small place that gets really busy and tight. We stopped by before it got super busy. I had the roast pork sandwich from the special menu. It was amazing. Wife had a chicken sandwich that was equally good another person in our group had a burger which they said was great. It did get really busy by the time we were leaving.

Love it! The food was great! I had the fish and chips and then the caprese sandwich and it was awesome! Highly recommend the caprese sandwich! The staff is so nice too! Very welcoming and followed up on my orders on both occasions that I was there. Reasonable prices too and great atmosphere! One of the better restaurants I’ve been to in the area!

The mozzarella sticks here are awesome. Quality food for a tavern! Not like bar food, this has quality items. They also have a specials menu which is fun, it switches up some items. The Apple Jameson wings were a fun, new taste to try. I highly recommend checking this out for a drinks and food.

What a great little Irish bar and grill!. Ate here before a concert at the Ardmore Music Hall and plan on coming back! Had the Guinness beef stew and an order of Irish skins. Both were delicious! Drinks were good, too, and everything was reasonably priced. A lively crowd made for a fun atmosphere and our server (and all the staff for that matter) really made us happy we picked McCloskey’s! Can’t wait for our next visit.
