She comes back again 5 mins later and tells us we need to wrap up soon because she needs our table for other guests… Excuse me?! We weren’t planning on leaving so soon, but after her approach/comment we didn’t want to be there anymore anyway so I call my Uber which was 7 minutes away. Then she comes back AGAIN to tell us we have been here well over two hours, closed out, and she wants her table rotated. First of all that wasn’t even true. I clocked the time when she came to say that – it was 6:44pm. Only 1 hour and 24 mins since I got there. I didn’t realize there was a time limit on how long you could sit and enjoy your evening at a table. Whatever. We tell her we’re just waiting for my Uber which is now 6 mins away and she says no we cannot stay at the table and to get up. My friend and I were just in shock. I have never had this happen to me.. EVER! Not wanting to cause a scene, we reluctantly get up and now we’re standing in the doorway awkwardly waiting for my Uber. Mind you, all over patrons around us are staring probably wondering if we did something wrong. So humiliating smh. Also, the food was not good. Cheap, bar style food. But the experience was the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced. Don’t go here.
This was EXTREMELY rude and embarrassing. I understand asking us to gather at the bar in order to flip the table but asking us to leave is harsh and unprofessional especially when we only needed 5 more min. I would’ve happily ordered another drink at the bar so my friend could’ve finished her drink but no we were asked to leave. I’ve never had this happen before. I hope Caitlyn is trained to handle situations like this more appropriately.
There were also a few people who entered when I did who were still happily seated at their tables when we left.
And for anyone wondering… yes, I am a person of color. And yes, I’ve waited tables at a busy restaurant.
When a customer makes a reservation and arrives on time, the manager shouldn’t give away the reserved table to another couple who happens to walk in ahead of them, just because they might be “regulars”. But last night upon our arrival, this was our customer experience. I walked over, saw the table had a Reserved card with my name on it, and looked at the manager and said “I believe this is our table – I have a reservation.” He chose to not acknowledge me at all me and seat the other couple. (Note: we were precisely on time for our reservation!)
Turning to the hostess I informed her we were there for our reservation and she looked horrified when she saw the manager seating the other couple. We saw her discuss this with him but were left to wait at least 15 more minutes while others were seated for later reservation times. In the end, we got seated, but the entire experience was soured by the manager’s decision to give preferential treatment to non-reservation customers he knew, and not acknowledge me or my reservation because he didn’t recognize me. (At a minimum he could have said SOMETHING to acknowledge me and not leave the poor hostess with the mess he created.)
As a result, not only did you lose my family’s business (yes, we are repeat customers) but you lost the potential ongoing business of my guest and her family — new Lower Merion residents who just moved to town, who I had hoped to welcome to the neighborhood by showing them a fun, local establishment.
I rarely leave reviews, but my experience at McCloskey’s Tavern was bad enough that I feel obligated to warn others.
From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt hostile and unwelcoming. The staff was rude, dismissive, and openly disrespectful. I was spoken to in a condescending tone, ignored when asking basic questions, and treated very differently from other patrons around me. It was impossible not to notice the contrast in how I was handled versus others.
What should have been a casual meal turned into an uncomfortable and embarrassing experience. I left feeling disrespected and genuinely unwelcome. No customer should walk out of a restaurant feeling singled out or devalued.
Between the poor service, lack of professionalism, and the overall negative energy, I will absolutely never return. There are far too many places that treat people with basic courtesy and respect to waste time or money here.
Do better.
