Reviews
When you touch the table, it feels sticky. However, the biggest shock was visiting the woman’s bathroom: thick layers of dust accumulated around the vents. Strong chemical smell. Poor water pressure to wash hands. Drinking water brought to the table had a musty smell/taste.
The food itself was not bad, but is more accurately described as mediocre. My main concern with this restaurant is sanitation.
As a celiac, I spoke with the kitchen about my strict gluten-free requirements, and they were very honest about cross-contamination risks. At their recommendation, I went with the Lamb Tagine, which is slow-cooked without gluten ingredients.
The table also ordered extra Dolmas and the Mazévo Platter which has gluten-free options.
Unfortunately, the lamb was hard as a rock, and it was NOT a rack of lamb it was the tiniest ball of lamb meat I had ever seen and definitely NOT worth the price! The portions were NOT generous as some reviews mentioned and we were still pretty hungry after we left. I do not anticipate returning again. It just was not for us.
I did really like the baba ghanoush and labneh with the bread.
The shakshuka was very good with PLENTY of flavor. It was honestly a bit more flavor than I prefer but I like my food on the blander side so can’t complain there. Eggs were cooked very well sunny side up. The combination of the spices, runny yolk, cheese, and the French baguette were awesome. My girlfriend ordered the chicken shawarma plate and it was slightly salty but again we prefer our food on the blander side.
Service was awesome. We were checked in on frequently with waters cups always full. The server wiped down our table because some water spilled and then swapped out my baguettes with new ones because he was concerned that some dust may have gotten on them. I said it was ok but it was a nice gesture.
Last thing I’ll touch on is the pricing. The pricing is honestly not bad at all considering the generous portions and especially the location. Most places on Tennyson tend to be on the pricier side but Mazevo seems very reasonably priced.
I look forward to going back to Mazevo for a healthy, reasonably-priced meal again in the near future and recommend others to do the same!
