The food brings you to the streets of Afghanistan, with food, although western influenced, probably mirrors what one would find in Afghanistan today.

The Afghan burger (which is really a wrap) was amazing! Great taste, a little skimpy on the beef (which was just 2 sausages) for my husband but it was heavy and well balanced with egg, fries and their famous sauce.

We also tried the Afghan fries, which were delicious and crispy! Hint if mint, lime, amazing seasoning and jalapeno vinaigrette on top with their famous sauce! The sauces were the highlight, especially their house sauce. This place is incredibly vegan friendly, to the extent that their house sauce uses vegan mayo.

The vegan soup came with bread. The bread was phenomenal, and paired well with the soup.

If you haven’t tried it already, definitely worth a visit!

I made a last-minute stop after an appointment in the neighborhood. It was too late for lunch and too early for dinner so I picked up an order to take home. Mazako has been open for 3 weeks now and I have heard good things on social media. The dining area is clean and bright. I am not familiar with Afghan food so the friendly staff member helped me make some selections. Each menu item is clearly marked for dietary preference, gluten-free and vegan options are available. I chose the Qabuli Palau Chopan Kabob (lamb kebab over rice) and the Mantu (spiced beef and onion dumplings). Each dish was full of flavor. The serving size was just right for me. I am not able to eat fresh mint so the staff made a few adjustments to my meal so I could enjoy all the rest of the flavors. I was very pleased with my meal and plan to return to try out some of their other menu selections. The only reason I didn’t give the food five stars is because the lamb kebab was not quite as tender and juicy as I had hoped.

Best afghan restaurant I’ve been to! The place is very welcoming. The colors of the restaurant are bright and inviting. Decor is beautiful. Very delicious food, I had Ashoka and firni, it was delicious. The best!

Ordered mantu, qabili Palau chopan kabob, chicken, and doogh. Chopan kabab’s meat is a bit tougher than I expected; chicken kabob is much softer. But both are delicious! Very recommend!

3.5 stars. I was really excited to try this place. I like the colors and decor when you walk in, small but inviting. My friend and I started with the Mantu (dumplings). The spiced beef filling was delicious but the ratio of filling to wrapper was off. The dumpling was mostly wrapper with very little filling. I had the Qabuli Palau Chopan Kabob and my friend had another lamb dish. Again the proportion were off, way too much rice and not enough lamb and other toppings. The lamb was a bit chewy but had good flavor and I appreciate the sauces were served on the side. Our favorite dish was the Chai Sabz (green tea with cardamom). This drink was warm and aromatic, I could drink this every day! Overall, nothing was outstanding, except the tea, but I know they just opened so they probably are still working on a few things. I would be willing to try them again after they have been open for awhile.

Was able to preview the food since we know the owners from another local gem. The cold Shor soup had a perfect acidity and the Ash Noodle with Beef is an amazing bite. We had the lamb kabob which was well seasoned. The understated star may be the eggplant/yogurt dipping side dish which is so satisfying after the kabob bite. Ask for the chutney for the kabob too. Can’t wait to frequent when they open!!

During my 1st visit, opening week, my partner and I ordered the Qabuli Palau Chopan Kabob (lamb kabob), Bolani Kadu (butternut squash crispy flatbread), and Mazako Veggie Trio. It was delicious and flavorful. It made me want to come back and recommend this place to friends.
Went again a month later and had the opposite experience. The lamb was dry and eggplant was chunky (unlike my other visit and unlike pictures you see it is more of a pure’e). Aushak (dumplings) had little to no minced beef, garlic yogurt, or mint. It looked nothing like other people’s photographs! I searched for the minced beef and garlic yogurt, I found only an equivalent amount of 1 tablespoon worth of each, which left the dish bland and lack luster. So sad because the little bit of beef I had actually tasted good. The biggest disappointment was the Bolani Kadu, which was burnt on 1 side, chewy and soggy, not crispy, and had the tiniest-tiniest-tiniest amount of butternut squash (approximately 1 tsp worth). I don’t know how something so charred can also be so chewy! It was so bad, since it tasted like burnt ash, that I threw most of it away. I loved it the 1st time (1st time it was crispy, filled with squash), was excited to have it again, and was going to be a recommended dish, but seems like quality control is already lost. Also, the crispy tofu apricot greens salad had 0 apricots and the vinaigrette was very strong vinegar taste. Lastly, paid .75 for an extra side of sauce that wasn’t even full….tiniest cup of sauce ever (worth .25 at most)! It would be nice if they maintain consistency and check their quality before packing to go.

My experience here was very underwhelming. I had been excited to try Mazako as I previously spent many years working in Howard county and absolutely loved several of the Afghan restaurants such as Mimi’s Kabob and Maiwand Kabob…unfortunately this place didn’t come close…my entre had just a very thin layer of meat and veggies on top of a container filled with 80% rice. What they consider naan bread was the size of a playing card and wasn’t charred/cooked in an authentic way and I was very disappointed that they didn’t even provide a yogurt sauce with the meal which is standard every other afghan restaurant I’ve ever been to (apparently you can buy for an additional charge). My food was freshly cooked and there wasn’t a quality issue per se but it was very bland and under seasoned. I ordered a shami kabob, a small cup of soup, and a can of Diet Coke and it came to over $27 including the 15% tip I left upon pre ordering at the counter. I can’t recommend this restaurant and don’t expect to return.

I have my visit 5 stars regardless because it’s great to see a new place with Afghan food in the area. But, I will agree with a few others, for the price, the portions are just OK. And, to be honest, flavor was just OK. I got the Shami Kabob (ground beef). For $14, it seemed like small meat portions. And I was hoping for nice hot and fresh bread versus the small piece that comes with it. I will say they were very pleasant and I think the menu options are overall really nice. I would make another visit to try other options.
