I only regret not being able to taste more of the menu. The homemade potatoes were top class, and the fries and pancakes were just as impressive. The French toast didn’t quite match my expectations, but overall it was a great brunch experience. The milkshakes were excellent as well, and the beer selection was solid and well curated.
We shared the waffle to start, plus the tuna melt, the meatloaf hot plate, and a side of fries. The waffle really is as good as everyone says. I used a little less of the maple butter because it leaned salty for me. The tuna melt was perfection, especially with their housemade hot sauce. The meatloaf was just okay — I’d skip it. The fries were crispy, fresh, and exactly what you want from diner-style fries, so definitely add those on.
Service was great, and there are still so many things on the menu I want to try, so I’ll definitely be back for breakfast. We tried to order the hot chocolate but they were sold out, so if you want it, get that in earlier, especially if you’re there late. Ended up with a slice of chocolate cake instead and wow — they do not skimp. Huge, moist, decadent slice.
Are the prices high? Yeah. But most diners in the country serve Sysco Foods, and this place clearly doesn’t. So don’t compare it to your usual diner prices — you’re paying for better-quality food and it shows.
Also: my friends went the next day at 5PM and only waited five minutes, so earlier seems the move.
Is the hot chocolate fantastic and better than I imagined? YES.
At the end of the day it’s a small charming diner full of personality with a well crafted menu and efficient service. If that’s what you’re looking for- you’ll have fun and enjoy it. Phil & family have opened a real gem in the neighborhood.
My recommendation is to reach out to them if you’re flexible. They happily and quickly helped me pick a time to come that would be my least likely chance of having to wait. And what do you know? We walked right in and were served immediately.
Very expensive for what it is. For two people, I think, we were at $120 inc tip. Particularly for breakfast I think that’s a lot. But I also think that’s LA, so what are you gonna do.
Atmosphere and details = a master class in how to tell a story in a restaurant. This isn’t the chrome & red pleather diner of the 50s in movies. It’s diner food with Brooklyn Egg Creams and malted shakes meets your grandmothers wood-paneled dining room meets a Vermont or Hudson Valley B&B. A lot of “diner classics” are on the menu and some of their own inventions like the hot chocolate with roasted marshmallow.
I recommend, the:
– breakfast sandwich with sausage
– egg creams (even better than what you get in Brooklyn because these aren’t as watered down)
– French Toast (though you should know it’s more crispy than soft and has a really nice toasted caramel flavor because of how much it’s crisped up by the griddle. it’s still soft in the middle)
– NYC crumb cake (which is moist, warm, well seasoned and somehow a tad crispy on top all at once. not an easy feat to achieve!)
I do not recommend, the
– omelette (this was actually horrible. I ate two bites and couldn’t finish it, it was that bad. Too much pepper, strange-tasting cheese, and something else I couldn’t put my finger on. I would have returned it if I’d ever had the chance.)
I LOVED that they had Faygo cream soda in the bottle as a former MI resident.
Service is good. But they’re busy!! Service isn’t overly attentive. They are super friendly and helpful if you have questions though.
It’s a little loud, but you can still talk.
I don’t recommend it for big groups. This is really a place for parties of 2 and 4 only. Or great for 1 person alone at the counter!
The food? Absolutely top-tier. We started with a super fragrant coffee followed by the lox, which was perfectly balanced, fresh, and flavorful—definitely one of the best we’ve had in the city. The soft scrambled eggs were fluffy, light, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. It’s clear that every dish is made with care and high-quality ingredients.
And let’s talk about the hot chocolate—rich, creamy, and topped with a generous amount of marshmallow that just melt into pure indulgence. Perfect for a cozy vibe or to sweeten up your morning.
The service? Couldn’t have been better. Attentive, friendly, and quick without being overwhelming—definitely a big reason why we’ll be coming back. If you’re looking for a spot with amazing food, a welcoming atmosphere, and outstanding service, Max & Helen’s Diner should be at the top of your list. We’re already planning our next visit!
The cinnamon roll is everything you want: warm, soft, heavily cinnamon, generously frosted. It is best chased with a hot chocolate. Thick and chocolatey, topped with torch toasted marshmallow fluff. The larchmont slam delivers on the breakfast promise. Eggs are fluffy, home fries crisped just enough, pancake that holds the heat of the griddle, and sausage that is well seasoned. The waffle with maple butter has a crisp exterior and cloud soft inside, with maple butter that is rich and sweet.
Lunch leans equally strong. The tuna melt is crisp with high-grade tuna and sharp cheese, while the patty melt is juicy with deeply caramelized onions, rye toasted just right, and spicy mayo. Both served with the requisite pickle. The service is kind, the vibe is joyful, and the food is exactly what you hope for: elevated classics made with care. Max & Helen’s is a love letter to the american diner, handwritten, thoughtful, and sincere.
