The food is great, the fresh bread is really a highlight for this restaurant. You can tell how fresh it is. As an onion loved, I would’ve loved more onions. The pepper was SO spicy definitely do not get it if you normally order mild. The portion was perfect! Will definitely be back!

Visited for my husband birthday and we were very satisfied. Super high quality meats we had. It bacame a bit noisy near the bar and the tables are very close so at some point we had to shout each other. Food and service is excellent. Will visit again not at the peak time of weekends.

After seeing this new place open up, we really wanted to try it. We came one time just for a drink – the vibe looked really nice with the kitchen behind windows.

We finally came to treat ourselves and enjoy some good. And, it did not disappoint.

We started with the gem lettuce – the seasoning was delicious. I can only recommend for something fresh and tasty.
The skewers were also very good and soft.

We got different pieces of meat – cooked as advised with french fries and mashed potatoes. And, it was really good. The seasoning was on point. The meat delicious, not chewy just so good. I usually eat my meat a bit more cooked, but that was definitely perfect.
The fries were also super good!

Overall, it was a really great experience for good meat and extra plates.

We did have a drink each – that was good.

As expected it was on the pricey side, but a great experience to treat yourselves to a nice meal!

There is a distinct, recognizable rhythm to dining at a Jerry Greenberg restaurant—a hyper-systematized efficiency you might recognize from his other ventures like Sugarfish or Uovo. I have visited Matū Kai in Brentwood three times now, genuinely wanting to love its moody, dark-wood elegance and its accessible 100% grass-fed Wagyu premise. Yet, every time I walk out the door, I can’t shake the lingering realization that I have just dined at a very nice chain restaurant. The food isn’t bad, but it is aggressively “just okay,” feeling precision-engineered in a corporate test kitchen to offend absolutely no one. The signature bone broth is pleasant but often arrives lukewarm, and small plates like the wagyu meatballs or tenderloin satay eat like elevated mall food. Even the steak itself, while impeccably sourced and cooked to a house-dictated “warm red,” is mechanically executed. It completely lacks the primal, smoky char and slight imperfections that make a great steak feel alive.

That mechanized feeling unfortunately extends to the hospitality. At this price point, service should be a conversation, but here it is purely a transaction. Plates are dropped and whisked away with assembly-line urgency, and servers recite the beef’s regenerative farming origins less like passionate food lovers and more like they are reading a software user agreement. On a recent visit, our server vanished entirely between courses, leaving us staring at empty wine glasses for twenty long minutes. Brentwood is a neighborhood that historically embraces a reliable, slightly overpriced dining room, and Matū Kai certainly fits that bill. But with service devoid of warmth and food lacking real inspiration, it earns a generous three out of five stars. It is the culinary equivalent of a mid-tier luxury sedan: smooth, expensive, and completely forgettable.

I needed to take my time a write my review. Not just for Matu but more so specifically towards Ryan. I am a constant customer who loves their Philly cheesesteak and usually I just go, eat, enjoy my time with friends and family and I’m out. I don’t expect any interaction with those working as I understand it can get busy to attain to other customers but Ryan gave my family one and I will never forget it. We went to Matu to celebrate my son’s 7th birthday and Ryan was aware of the celebration. He interacted with such kindness, sincerity, and humbleness. He even brought a cake to celebrate his birthday and my son was so ecstatic and that not only made my day and my son’s day but also my wife. He made it feel like we came to my son’s birthday party and Ryan was hosting it! It was a gesture that we will never forget because you don’t get that any more. I highly request whoever works at Matu, to extend this compliment to him and with much plead, to bring this matter to the owners/manager. I never felt this much gratitude and for that I will be forever thankful to Ryan. Ryan if you see this, know you are a real one and my son will never forget you! You now made our visit so memorable that I now want to come to Matu even MORE as I now know there are people in this world like you! I hope nothing but good for you. You’re a true gem!

Weird. Nice atmosphere, and good staff. Management should educate staff, on the wine list. Wine list needs 4 selections for the by the glass selections. The sauv blanc was awful. No choices in whites BTG. Rare meat. Too much spice in Caesar salad and Steak tartar. Spice hides flavor. And you are promoting high end beef and its flavor. Weird. Not going back.

When you read the description of this Brentwood establishment as a steak restaurant, it really doesn’t stand out compared to most other venues.
Adding Waygu only increases the excitement but you have to wonder at what cost? Here is the brilliance of the management and menu, offering four price fixed meals or you can go à la carte.
We chose the Matu Dinner for 4 and were amazed at every dish. with a delicious bone broth, then the steak tartare with a Japanese accent. 8-Hour
Braised Beef Cheek with a celeriac puree, then the 3 oz Center Cut Filet (no knife needed) with ’47’ Salad was perfect. We then shared a chef sliced 12 oz Ribeye and the 11 oz NY Strip, served with grilled broccolini and a side of fries. All meat was served pink and warm. There were no dining decisions needed and 18% added SC with a no tipping policy made it easy. Every bite was memorable.
This 5-course tasting menu lived up to expectations. This is my new favorite “steak” restaurant in LA! PS, I hear the cheesesteak is to die for but is only served at the bar. Another day!

We had an incredible meal and experience celebrating my brothers engagement.

Our waiter Nico was honestly so amazing and made our experience so delightful. Have been to Matu and Matu Kai several times and this was our best experience yet.

The food is great but when you get impeccable service like we did from Nico it makes the experience that much better.

Easily one of the best cheesesteaks I’ve ever had. With or without long hot is amazing and the chips are delicious.

As a huge fan of the original Matu in Beverly Hills, I was beyond excited to check out Matu Kai — and I’m so happy to say that it exceeded every expectation.

Not only does Matu Kai maintain the stellar quality that made the original one of my all-time faves, but it also brings a fresh lineup of dishes that are truly phenomenal.

Got to try the new Pomodoro Meatballs which were super rich and saucy, with this smooth, melt-in-your-mouth quality to the meat. Also had the Ribeye Brochettes with onions and tomatoes which were another standout; lightly spiced, full of flavor. But the absolute must-have is the Tenderloin Satay. Comes with a Crying Tiger sauce that is insane!

Lastly, the new space is absolutely gorgeous. There’s a HUGE wraparound bar, a clear view into the kitchen, and a massive wood-fire grill. Incredible evolution of an already great spot — cannot wait to come back to Matu Kai.
