We ordered a baked mussel appetizer and the chicken teriyaki mixed tempura bento box. We ordered the mussels as soon as we sat down so we would get them before the bento box.
The service was a little off and I am not sure the server understood what we wanted. The miso soup and salad arrived first. The miso was delicious. The bento box arrived next. The portions were a little smaller than what I have seen at other restaurants, but flavors were good.
After waiting another 10 minutes, we had to find the server and ask about the mussels. Finaly the mussels were brought out but were not particularly good. The mussels were hot, but the foot was still attached to the shell on all of them. They were larger than we normally see and very chewy.
We may go back but we won’t get the mussels.

Matsuyama in Novato was a great find during our midday pit stop on the way to Sonoma County. I had the teriyaki beef and tempura combo, and both were delicious—the beef was tender with just the right amount of sweetness, and the tempura was crispy without being too greasy. My family and nephews all enjoyed their meals, and the kids’ plates were a hit.

The restaurant has a cozy, no-frills atmosphere, making it a great spot for a casual meal. My mom was surprised to find Japanese food in the area, but Matsuyama is definitely a solid local gem. The pricing was reasonable, especially for the quality and portion sizes. Service was friendly and efficient, making the experience even better. If I’m ever in the area again, I’d love to stop by and try more of their menu!

I brought my daughter in for dinner, she tried to order off the kids menu because she’s 12 and has a small appetite. When she tried to order the waiter immediately rudley shock his head and straight up told her no. She replied back she was 12 and he continued to make her order the adult portion that costs more. He was rude and embarrassed my poor daughter.

A Delightful Meal at Matsuyama

We were in Novato again today and decided to try another Japanese restaurant in town. This time, it was Matsuyama. The restaurant is a few blocks from the main strip in Novato, but it is easy to find. The place is small but can fit roughly 30-40 people, in my estimate. When we walked in, there was only one other pair of customers, but shortly after, the place filled up quickly. That was a good sign, I thought!

My significant other is on a very strict diet, so she had to ask all sorts of questions before she could place her order, but our server, a very nice young man named Jackson, was extremely helpful and patient. He listened carefully, helping her figure out what she should order, and even made some very useful suggestions.

The Yellowtail and Salmon Nigiri we ordered to start with were awesome! The fish were fresh and tasty. My partner went with Mixed Sashimi made of Tuna, Salmon, and Yellowtail, while I opted for Vegetable Udon.

The Vegetable Udon was delicious and filling. The broth was light, simple, and very tasty. I tried a couple of pieces of Tuna Sashimi, and just like the Salmon and Yellowtail, it was fresh and delicious.

Jackson made sure everything was in order at our table and made our first visit to Matsuyama even more pleasant. The restaurant also offers takeout and delivery services, which is great for those who prefer dining at home.

Food was excellent, server was excellent and everything came out tasting amazing. We traveled in from out of state and didn’t really know where to eat so we settled on this place and it certainly did not disappoint. We would eat here again. 5/5 on everything.

Good place. They do put wasabi under the sushi, so heads up. The sushi tasted fresh, nice big portions that came with both a soup and salad. The service was nice.

A bit of a cleanliness issue around the windows and corner. There was spider webs and a resident spider.

Nestled on a side street in Novato, among redwood trees, is a hidden gem. A cozy eatery, offering scrumptious, tasty traditional japanese cuisine. There is something for everyone, whether it be entrees, bento combinations, sushi, sashimi, or appetizers. The atmosphere is whimsical, with a collection of ornamental bonsai to elevate the feeling of zen. This is definitely a happy place, where the food is delicious, staff is exceptional, and the chef’s talents completed our dining experience.

Prefacing this by saying I loved the restaurant before it changed hands. The current restaurant was a gamble for me, and it hit my expectations perfectly. As in, the service was trying but they didn’t quite understand how to manage things, the food was not very good(the only decent thing being the tempura) and the Takoyaki I ordered felt like a frozen food. Not that frozen is particularly bad, but they must have barely thawed before cooking it and the insides were mushy and unappetizing. As well as not being remotely hot when served(some of the meat was still cold.) They also served the Takoyaki so late, it might as well be a dessert. The rolls that I ordered are passable, though the “spicy” wasn’t quite spicy, and I find mild salsa spicy. Their menu is decent, and has more variety, though the prices have risen. I will tack on that the water and tea were good, no complaints unless having lemon in your water bothers you. Overall, it was a huge disappointment, though maybe they will learn as time passes. In which case, I’ll come back to try everything again.

We had the combo plates. Miso soup was mainly broth, salad was fine (will ask for less dressing next time) and combo plate selection had many to choose from. Could potentially use a little more spices.
