The iced tea (not pictured) was really unique & tasty too.
The Broiled Hamachi Kama
I was initially thrown off guard here . How did a good sushi place from Great Neck get transplanted into a Roslyn deli? Usually if getting sushi at a deli, you are taking many risks. But not with Matsuya. Not only do they make their sushi creations as works of art, it was fresh and tasted very good as well (see photo). It was nice to be able to get a sushi roll as my son made me take him to Delicacies to get an Asahi bowl.
But the question is if people will really opt to sit in the side room of a busy delicatessen to have a sushi meal. The service is very warm and welcoming, and Matsuya makes every effort to make your table a finer dining experience, one glance to the side and you see someone eating their bacon/egg/cheese sandwich on a piece of paper. Hmmm.
And I can accept this, but at Matsuya, you are paying for a full service sushi dining experience in this setting (my one ‘special’ roll cost me $21 and with tip >$25. Not what I really want to be doing when going for a quick lunch.
Since I wrote the above I have now ordered delivery from Matsuya and it was great. Other sushi places around here take forever to get the food to you, but not Matsuya. And the fish is just as good as noted above.
I then wanted to see what the dinner vibe was and I was very surprised how this room was transformed (see photo).
So in conclusion: (I lifted my star rating a bit from the original as I experienced more)
— Sushi creations are fresh, well presented and taste great;
— Service very warm and welcoming;
— Atmosphere in the deli questionable during day, but night time vibes look great
— Cost given the setting might need to be recalibrated if grabbing lunch….but ok for dinner.
— As far as the sushi density and competition, time will tell.
The dishes were incredibly fresh and full of flavor — every bite tasted clean and beautifully prepared. From the sushi to the cooked dishes, everything was top quality and presented with elegance.
It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back again and again. Highly recommended for anyone who loves authentic Japanese cuisine
Favorites are: Matsuya roll with tuna or salmon, eel, cucumber and avocado roll, and wasabi tuna chips. The house salad is very good too and I love their limeade!
And as a sweet surprise for those who don’t love sushi , you can enjoy the BEST ever Kobe beef or chicken katsu sliders, or both.
I would and have gone just for that but the real gem is the sushi. Fresh fish prepared like it’s meant to be in a chill unpretentious atmosphere. JUST GO. !!!
