In a part of the Midwest where “spicy” usually means the cook accidentally used the black pepper shaker twice, Matsumoto is a straight-up portal to another dimension.
I walked in expecting a meat-and-potatoes vibe and instead found a bowl of ramen so dark and mysterious it looks like it was brewed in a cauldron by a very trendy warlock. I ordered the Tonkotsu Black, and let me tell you, that black garlic oil has more personality than most of the people I went to high school with.
The Breakdown:
The Vibe: Clean, modern, and noticeably lacking in deer taxidermy. It’s a bold choice for this zip code, and I’m here for it.
The “Heat” Factor: For 75 cents, you can add Chili Oil. Around here, that’s a dangerous game. It’s the kind of heat that makes you realize you have a soul, which is a lot to handle on a Tuesday at lunch.
The Broth: It’s “rich pork broth,” which is code for “I want to take a nap in this.”
The Add-Ons: They have “Crispy Onions” for $.75. Around here, that’s basically a food group, so I felt right at home.
If you’re tired of the local China buffet and want to feel like you’ve traveled further than the next county over, get in here. Just don’t ask for a side of fries.
Pro-tip: If you bring your Grandpa, tell him the “Tonkotsu” is just fancy pork stew. And maybe hide the chili oil from him unless you want to hear about his heartburn for the next three days.

Never thought I would find a legit awesome ramen shop in the middle of Wisconsin. I got the Shoyu Ramen and it was fabulous. The broth was very savory – lots of flavor. The ramen was perfect texture. I added gyoza on the side and they were good. If you are hungry add the extra noodles for a couple $$. The portions were average but not huge. Service was very fast. I was eating in less than 5 minutes. They do shut down between the lunch and dinner service, so be aware of the times. Can’t wait to go back! (My photo is from half way through my meal – apologies – I was hungry!)

I’ve gone here enough to have tried every single thing on the menu. Everything is phenomenal, but the tantanmen has been my go-to and my wife usually sticks to either the shoyu or the tonkatsu black. Always get the gyoza and extra egg. Very authentic, very delicious.

I was traveling for work and many of my clients highly recommended this spot. So I knew I had to go check it out

I heard from the locals that the owner is authentic Japanese and the ramen definitely tastes like it. It complimented very well with the cold weather.

I recommend the Tonkotsu ramen!

Wow! What a great find. It is in downtown Sparta across the street from a nice downtown River park with tables . Excellent solution for us as we traveled with our dog. Got food to go, walked across the street and enjoyed it in the park. The food was amazing.

This place is worthy of a stop! We pulled off I 90. Saw a review for Matsumoto Ramen House in cute quiet downtown Sparta.

We were quickly greeted and guided through the menu. I chose the Kimchi Ramen. Spicy Kimchi, that over didn’t over power the excellent pork broth, yet had a zip! Plenty of ramen, some slices of pork. Liked it!

My wife had the Tantanmen. Light, spicy broth, tasty pork, tender ramen.

Matsumoto Ramen could hold its own in any city. ( Being from the NW, we’ve had some great ramen)

I wanted the Gyoza, but they were out. No biggie, the ramen was perfect.

It’s a nice surprise to roll into a town and find this quality food!

I can see how popular this place is. Very traditional atmosphere and great services. All you’d need is the old Ramen kiosk to match Japan. I love the simple broth menu and the availability of Japanese drinks. A bit shame you can’t order drinks over the counter and have to jump in line to order. Loved that the main owner jumped in to cook and assist when things got busy. Would go again

Absolutely fantastic food. Can’t miss.

Went with a group of 13 (lots of kids too) and it was fantastic. Lots of side orders and extras; nothing was missed.
Can’t recommend highly enough.

If there is ONE drawback: once you eat here, all you will think about is the next time you will get to do so again. You will compare all ramen shops to this one, and nothing will measure up.

10/10 Everyone I know has to listen to me talk about how great Matsumoto is. We love it so very much! The food and atmosphere are both great! In the summer, we get our meals “to go” and sit on benches by the river across the road.
