Matcha Cafe Maiko is a cozy cafe in Fort Lee that’s all about matcha and Japanese-style desserts, part of a broader chain known for its matcha treats and soft-serve desserts.

The shop’s vibe is laid-back and inviting, making it a nice stop for a quick refreshing drink or sweet treat. Service was quick and efficient, even when it got a little busy, and the staff were friendly throughout our visit.

We tried their matcha drink, which was refreshing and had a decent matcha flavor, but wasn’t as strong as we expected. The sweets here pair really well with the matcha, leaning toward a balance of creaminess and earthiness without being overly sweet.

Overall, Matcha Cafe Maiko is a solid choice if you’re craving something matcha-centric.

Last time I visited, I ordered a matcha latte with red bean. After the first sip, I noticed a strange taste and took another sip to be sure. It turned out the red bean was spoiled, so I had to go back and ask them to remake the drink without it.

This time, on 12/27 around 5:30 PM, I ordered a hojicha latte. After placing my order, I noticed there was a free size upgrade promotion running throughout December, so I asked if my drink could be upgraded. The staff member said no, explaining that it had to be done while ordering for the promotion to apply. That excuse felt very lame and honestly came across as laziness, especially since it was a free upgrade and could have easily been accommodated.

At another Maiko location (Garden State Plaza), the staff proactively informed me about the promotion and asked if I wanted the upgrade, which is what I would expect. Unfortunately, the Fort Lee location didn’t offer the same experience. Even after I asked, it felt like I was given weak excuses rather than a genuine effort to help.

On top of that, the hojicha latte here was overly milky. I’ve had the same drink at other Maiko locations where it tasted much nuttier and more balanced, so this was disappointing.

I really love Maiko overall, but based on these experiences, I wouldn’t visit the Fort Lee location again.

I was at maiko just now and this will be my last visit because of what I experienced today with the workers. I ordered a black sesame latte and made it a float with soft serve. From the first sip I could tell the milk was spoiled. I confirmed I wasn’t wrong after my husband tried it too and he almost threw up. We told the staff and I don’t even remember getting an apology for being served an inedible drink. They said we could switch to something else so I asked for just ice cream instead. Then they made it confusing with the price. One worker just decided to make it a medium soft serve without asking me. That cost less than what I originally paid. Then they acted like I owed them. I did the calculation, which was simple math, and knew I paid more not less. So I tried to make it work by asking if I could add a topping to even out the price with the ice cream they gave me without discussion. But they explained that the ice cream I got, which was 9.50 plus tax, is the same as the latte with float I originally ordered, which was 10.25 plus tax. Clearly they are not the same. One worker at one point said the latte with float is more expensive because it’s considered two items compared to ice cream which is considered one item. That made no sense.
Throughout this whole nonsense they treated us like WE were the problem. Only at the end did they offer a topping like they were doing us a big favor. We never asked for free stuff. We just wanted something fair.
At the end of the day this was never about that 75c difference. If they had at least not treated us like we were the problem or if there was a sincere apology for serving spoiled milk or even if they had just given us an something that matched the price we paid, I would not have felt so upset and I would not be writing this review.
The whole thing left me with a bad taste and bad vibes. I am upset that I got treated like a difficult customer for simply asking for a non spoiled dessert. The owner really needs to train the staff better. It should not be this stressful to just get ice cream.

love green tea ice cream, so this has always been my go-to place. One small downside is that the texture of the ice cream seems to vary each time I visit. For example, sometimes it’s too frozen and breaks apart, while other times it’s so creamy that it stretches almost like cheese. The staff attending customers are consistently unfriendly. Still, this place has the best green tea ice cream in the area.

Got the matcha latte with ube soft serve and really enjoyed it as I was craving both of those things today and was very happy to find a place that actually serves that. Overall impressed with the amount of combinations they have to offer. I’m 100% coming back to try their banana pudding matcha!!!

Matcha soft serve has such a rich matcha flavor. Very satisfied! BUT the ube flavor… I don’t recommend because you barely taste ube and it just tastes like vanilla soft serve. We also ordered a matcha latte and it really soothed our soul. I wouldn’t say it’s the most high quality but was good enough! I would go again for sure for their matcha.

I have been going to Matcha Maiko for years and they are hands down the best matcha place in town with a great variety of other flavors and add ons. Case in point: Hojicha sundae and banana pudding sundae with matcha soft serve.

Great spot for Matcha tea and ice cream! There are a lot of different options so you can customize your order in a number of ways. The matcha latte is soo good. Spots specifically for Matcha aren’t as common these days so it was really cool to see. The inside is nice, but there isn’t much seating and it can get crowded pretty quickly so I would say this is much more of a takeaway spot. The staff is diligent and efficient with getting out your order quickly. I quite enjoyed my visit to Matcha Cafe Maiko and would highly recommend it.

The store is tiny but great. Very clean and a bit of seating by the window. Got the taro signature soft serve cone and ube latte and both were delicious. Overall great experience and would definitely check it out if you’re in the area.
