Not a great experience start to finish. Came here with my brother for dinner while traveling cross country. Waited a while to be acknowledged (let alone seated) after walking in. There were only 3 tables seated when I arrived, and two waitresses. After finally being seated and placing our drink orders, took another 10 minutes to get our drinks (we ordered waters). Ordered an appetizer and our entrees, then waited another 15 minutes for our appetizer (fried mushrooms) followed by our entrees about 10 minutes later. I ordered a steak cooked medium, came out overcooked and lacked any seasoning, not even salt and pepper. My brother ordered a fajita, also bland. After we were done eating, waited forever to get our check, drinks were empty. I don’t think our waiter was actually a waiter. When I tried to pay the bill by the front door, had to wait yet again while the waitresses argued about who was busier because neither of them wanted to work the register. For what it’s worth the other tables all seemed to be occupied by locals and the staff seemed friendly and attentive to them. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re just passing through.

I was looking forward to Mexican food and was a little disappointed. 3 items on the menu that offered standard fare. The rest of the menu is standard western cuisine. I ordered the sizzling platter of fajitas and it came out warm. Nothing special. I then had to wait for a plate and the salsa and sour cream. I also had to ask for more napkins since the only give you one wrapped around the cutlery. This is a new restaurant refurbished out of an old pub/steakhouse. New chairs in the middle tables but the booths are still the old worn ones. So Shelby has limited dining options and this one seems the best. I would go back here but expect standard pub food.

Food that we did get was good … not much else in town
Wait expected… dinner time and 3 other tables came in about same time. – 10 minutes to order after drinks
Issue- both of us ordered the same thing – fajitas. Brought out one meal with no plates after 25 minutes. Still sitting waiting for the other dinner 30 minutes later. Asked twice when others who came later received their fajita meals. Cancelled the second meal and bailed when waitress couldn’t provide any idea when it would be ready.

They let us in 15 minutes prior to closing and served us! The chicken fried steak was tender; it was fork tender! The gravy I wasn’t so crazy about but overall it was good portions for a fair price. Also the garlic button mushroom appetizer were absolutely AMAZING!! Will definitely order them again!

I ordered the ribeye I took three bites of it and couldn’t eat the rest. To tough wasn’t cooked the way I ordered it. My friend ordered the filet mignon. And to be honest. I have never seen one that looked like the one he ordered. I’m from tx. We eat a lot of steak ok. His filet mignon had more gristle in it than the leg bone would have had. My meal was $42. His was over $70. And whe we left and went to Pizza Hut and just got a pizza for $24 dollars don’t waste your time or money here unless your going into the casino side of the restaurant. Restaurant food very highly not recommended. Might make suitable doggie treats for some people. But I didn’t even take the left overs home to my dog. I didn’t want to put the ol guy through what I went through just for dinner. He loved the pizza though. DONT EAT AT THE MATADOR IN SHELBY MT. UNLESS YOU LIKE PAYING FOR DISAPPOINTMENT.

The husband and I came in for our anniversary dinner.
The server was friendly, but unknowlagable. She brought me the wrong drink completely.

The Good: The bar food appetizers were pretty good.
I got the chicken marsala, a dish I ordered frequently at other restaurants. The marsala sauce was not good at all. I offered some to my husband to see if it was just my opinion but he found it even distasteful.

He ordered the $40 New York steak. It was unseasoned and not anything special. In addition on the menu it appears that the meal comes with a salad, starch and an option of two vegetables.

When we got our cheque, the vegetable was an upcharge. This was not made clear on the menu.

Our sever brought out the cheque before asking if we would like desert.

My husband spoke with the kitchen manager and steps were taken. Overall our impression was that there is room for improvement, but the staff are doing their best to create a good experience.
In order to make things better, they did offer us desert and another drink on the house. This was appreciated.

UPDATED REVIEW, 9/27/25:
When Matador Steakhouse first opened about five months ago, we were really impressed. Our first visits were great — the food was flavorful, well-prepared, and the service was excellent. We even left a glowing review after our initial experience.

Unfortunately, the food quality has gone downhill with each visit. On our most recent trip, several dishes were disappointing. My husband ordered a “14oz Ribeye,” but what arrived was extremely thin and definitely didn’t seem like the right cut or size. My daughter’s grilled cheese was burnt, and at six years old, she refused to eat it because of the burnt taste. My son, who usually enjoys the Mexican options, couldn’t eat his burrito — it was dry, and the beans and rice were unappealing. Nobody deserves to be seved the rice and beans they offer. Honestly, if the Mexican section is going to stay on the menu, it really needs improvement. My own food was just okay — nothing memorable.

The one consistent positive is the service. The staff continues to be friendly and attentive. They asked how our meal was, and I simply said it was fine. In hindsight, I should have been more honest — it’s hard for a place to improve if no one tells them where things are falling short.

We were really rooting for Matador to become a go-to spot in town. Hopefully things turn around in the kitchen, because the potential is still there. We’d love to be able to update this review again — in a more positive direction.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: 5 STARS. We had an amazing experience at the Matador Steakhouse. This new gem in town is definitely a must-try. My husband ordered the New York strip, and he said it was the best steak he’s ever had — perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor. I had the shrimp and chicken pasta, which was equally fantastic.

What really stood out, though, was the excellent service. Our server was attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed. It was a nice touch when the chef came out to introduce himself and check on our meal — it really shows the level of care they put into their food.

Highly recommend this place. We’ll definitely be back.

Over all I was very happy with my experience here. I got the 10oz sirloin stake. It was a very tender stake, The flavor was nice and al the way through. It was cooked to my request, medium rare.
I had the steamed green beans. They were cooked well, they still had body, they weren’t soft mush. The downside is they had very little flavor, but salt and pepper fixed that.
My salad came out warm, I’m not a fan of warm salad but it was still good. The dressing came as a side, which is nice. I feel like when they put the dressing on, usually it’s a lot more than I like.
So, there are little things, but overall I am very happy this me experience.
