First time here and OUTSTANDING! Food AMAZING!!! Our bartender, Clay, AMAZING! I’m definitely coming back and recommending The Matador to my friends and colleagues. Bring from Southern California, it’s difficult to find authentic Mexican food elsewhere. This place nailed it!

Solid spot overall. Mexican cuisine with a strong tequila selection.
Reliable with a good amount of seating.

PSA: Happy Hour here is a pretty good value (esp. street tacos), running from 4-6pm and 10pm-close.

I can’t recommend this location enough. Staff, food and atmosphere. If McKenzie, Clay, Bradley or Mac is your bartender, you’re in for a treat! Not only are they personable. They make a really good drink! If you find yourself on the floor (booth or outside) ask tobe seated in Kristen, Jenny, Jasmine, or Malissa’s section. They’re extremely funny and you’ll feel more like a friend, than just a customer. If you show up for happy hour, I recommend the deconstructed nachos (off menu item) (Chips on the side, no shredded cheese, sub queso, steak as protein, black beans, pico, & guac) it’s the perfect chip dip ratio! Cheers!

Matador East Portland is a great place to eat. The food was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared, with solid portions that make it worth the stop. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Overall, it’s a reliable spot for a good meal, and I’d definitely come back when I’m in the area. ️

Most locals know this place has a great happy hour! We go and always get the Habanero Prawns and just look at this gorgeous meal! Spicy, rich flavor, a good handful of prawns served with Polenta cake. And that sauce- just give me a spoon! Nice and spicy Hot. Super good salsa and chips, love the bacon wrapped stuffed Jalapeños too!

I can’t give the East side Matador higher praise. It has become my cheers. They all know my name, my drink, my food order. They’re alway nice, sitting in their section or not. Just happy to see you. Special shout out to the New server Ginger. She just started and already knows my name. Is so sweet, amazing attitude, super hard working & always says hi when she sees me. She is a great addition, to an already incredible staff! Stop in and see her, you won’t be disappointed!

A joy to review. Matador is such a beautiful place with attentive staff and amazing cuisine. The cocktails are great too. Happy hour comes back around at 10pm which is a lovely surprise for the late night crowd.

The restaurant looks pretty nice but it’s really dark inside and not much light so it’s hard to read the menu. We got there at 8pm and it was pretty empty. We got greeted with attitude by the server (she) 🙁 the chips and salsa didn’t come until 8:30, our drinks can faster and we had to ask the guy who brought our drinks for some water since our the server didn’t bring us any. On the menu they had a QR code offer where if you sign up for their rewards system you get free nachos and we decide to do it later to find out by the rude server and manger that the rewards system is not available in the US.so why advertise it?? After a 1hr wait we finally got our food and was surprise with how long it took since the restaurant was EMPTY. Later we got the check and saw they charged the nachos which we were confused because the manger said he was going to wave the nachos. Also we noticed that the server auto trip 25% which would have been fine if she actually served us and checked up on us. But she didn’t and she was only serving Attitude the whole time.
Staff was rude and need to communicate better with costumers. The food was ok. And their floor is dirty with food under the table.

I prefer the service at the 23rd location and the more expansive space creates a better vibe. The decor is the same style here as there. Some reviews mention not liking the music but it’s the perfect combo of current popular hip hop, millennial club/rap and mainstream chill. It doesn’t go with the resteraunt but boy do I love it. The place is dark and vibey. Half the menu is bland and the other half incredible. I love the fish tacos and brussel sprouts. I give the Burnside location four stars and the 23rd 5. My order has never been completely correct at Burnside. Tonight they served my friend and my tacos on the same plate. She ordered one in order the other. Switched our wines up as well. Thankfully we were friend that didn’t mind that we took a drink of each other wine/sharing a plate. Either our server was leaving her coworker to do more than her share of the work or the server that wasn’t our official had an attitude. Dropping our plates off with a hard thump each time and just off. I’ve been irritated at work serving those who aren’t officially mine so I could understand but something was just off with the vibe.

Matador is perfect for a bite with friends. You can share the nachos between 2,3, even 4 friends and they’re not that expensive.

We didn’t get drinks but the happy hour pricing was so cheap!
