Reviews
Big shoutout to Ms. Q and Tim for their conversation and attentiveness.
Now the food?? 10/10 steaks were buttery and cooked to perfection!!! The sides were delicious and the portions were super healthy!! That lobster Mac and cheese had one of the craziest cheese pulls I’ve had in a mac. The warm butter cake is now my all time favorite dessert so good!
Will definitely be returning and you should already be booking your res to visit also!
Let me start by saying that a reservation is highly recommended at Mastro’s, and for good reason. The ambiance is super nice, super busy with live music and almost full to the brim on a weekday dinner.
My experience was a mix of genuinely stellar moments and a few areas where my high expectations fell slightly short, ultimately leading me to feel they fared fairly well and deserve a second chance.
The appetizers set an incredibly high bar. The Lobster Bisque Soup was everything you want it to be: creamy, rich, and bursting with flavor. The Crab Cake was another true gem—flaky, moist, and wonderfully seasoned.
Our server, Torrell, was excellent—attentive and highly personable. However, my only service critique is that the starter recommendations, particularly the infamous Mastro’s Bakon, felt a little too pushed, resulting in an overload of food for a single diner. The Bakon itself was decent but not fancy; it was overly sauced and a bit too salty, though I did enjoy that signature crispy outer crunch.
The Bone-In Rib Eye (Medium) was the biggest point of observation. While certainly flavorful, the taste felt derived more from the heavy marinade and charring than the quality of the beef itself, which is what I personally prefer. The char was, at points, inedibly excessive, masking and slightly ruining the true steak flavor.
What saved the main course was the incredible side: the Lobster Mashed Potatoes. They were the absolute star of the show, indulgent and unforgettable.
A constructive suggestion: Mastro’s must introduce single-person serving sizes for some of their magnificent sides to better accommodate solo diners. I still had a great overall experience and will definitely give them another chance next time I’m in NY or DC.
The food was delicious. I really enjoyed everything they put in front of us especially the king crab fried rice.
The staff were really nice and overall i would recommend this place.
THANKS EDWIN !
I’ll start with the cons:
1. It took some time to receive our food – I’m not sure if it was because we were a party of nine; however, it was a good wait.
2. When the food arrived, the plates were lukewarm at best. I wished my plate was hot like it has been several times before. The manager did apologize for that.
3. The servers started sharing my sides with the whole table. I was left with a corner of my sides, even though I specifically asked to not share since I wanted to take it to go. Our server for the evening apologized and brought one of the sides back out to me. I didn’t receive the other one.
4. The food was underwhelming based on seasoning/taste and undercooked based on the temperature – it was not memorable like the other times I’ve visited. My sister, who was celebrating her birthday yesterday had to ask the kitchen to cook her steak to medium well. They took the steak back in and it was cooked slightly; it was not to her liking. The food was bland; not as seasoned and felt grainy as well. I don’t know what had happened there. We told the manager and she gave my sister a free dessert for her birthday.
The pros:
1. I love that this restaurant accommodates people to enjoy a fine dining experience. It was nice to see a younger crowd of people enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant.
2. The live music is always a fantastic experience here. I walked in and heard a person request “You Get What You Give” by New Radicals – I love that!
3. Even though the food was underwhelming, I believe that the service provided is amazing. You don’t have to lay a finger on mostly anything; everything is served with professionalism from the serving staff.
4. It’s located in the heart of Manhattan; such a beautiful place to be in especially in the holidays.
Overall, I think this experience could have been better based on the bill: $1,251. That was $165 per person. I hope this review supports the restaurant in understanding what could be adjusted moving forward.
