After a recent tour in the neighborhood, my wife and I went to Masala Story for dinner. Their host was great. He gave us a lay of the land as we were deciding which items to order. We were very satisfied with the order. The chicken vindaloo definitely stood out among the other dishes we ordered. I was a little surprised by the paper plates and the food being served with to-go boxes but the quality of the food was great. We enjoyed our visit and look forward to coming back.

The biryani was decent. Please be aware, the biryani here isn’t the traditional Hyderabadi biryani, it’s more Punjabi/homestyle. The spicing was pretty good, although for the cost ($20) I kinda expected more food. I’ve gotten more Biryani for less money in the Bay Area and food costs there are much higher than here lol.

The owner put me onto Hayward 5000 (a beer) which is incredible, I’ll definitely have it again the next chance I get.

The owner is super nice, I gave him basically precisely this feedback and he was super nice about all of it. I’d definitely come back here again if I’m ever in the area and try something else. He also recommended I try another spot of his, called G.O.A.T. room so I’ll definitely visit when I can.

Excellent Indian food. Fast, friendly service and gave tasty recommendations. Loved the butter chicken, lamb samosas and masala chai tea. We will be back!

We ordered butter chicken, saag chicken, tandoori chicken, lamb korma and naan. All of the curries had a fantastic flavour unfortunately what was a huge let down was the meat. The chicken in all the dishes was extremely dry and off-putting. It tasted severely overcooked and old. The naan was also super crumbly and oily (not with butter or ghee but oil) I unfortunately would not order from here again based on that. Or I would only get vegetarian dishes. Please improve the way you cook the chicken this restaurant could be fantastic

I tried the $25 non-vegetarian Indian Thali, which comes with three vegetarian and two non-vegetarian curries, and the $5 lacha paratha. The cuisine tastes like Punjabi food and is wonderful. We also tried nimbu pani (lemon water) and plain paratha, all of which were delicious.

03/15/2025- My family decided to go to this restaurant because it is new, it is one block from our kids school, and we love Indian foods! Now, this is not a super large restaurant. There is inside and outside covered eating spaces. The owners( family) are nice and polite. We all ordered Koroma with different things like: chicken with bone, shrimp, or lamb. Ordered Naan bread. Ordered Thai Hot Tea. Ordered appetizers: spinach rolls, and etc. The prices kinda pricey. We spent around $144 for three people. Great atmosphere! Nice bar area. We chose to sit outside in like a covered square tent like space. The weather was okay outside. We started at 6:30pm and closed it down around 9:15 pm because our kid was attending a “ Sneaker Ball” at his school! Loved the tasty delicious food. The chef took care of us. We will be back! Yum! Yum! Yum!

This is my absolute favorite Indian place in the whole DMV. The place is decorated very well and the staff are so kind. My friend struck up a conversation with them and her and the staff realized that their families are from the same place in India. She was missing her family and without hesitation they gave us free sweets and hot chais. This was the best chai I have ever had in my life and at any Indian restaurant. Their chicken Tika Masala is so, so good. It’s a big portion size and the sauce is incredibly flavorful. I’m sad I don’t live in the at area anymore because no India place has measured up. Came for the food, stayed for the good vibes (and the really good food lol.) also yes it is a little pricey but they’re a small family business in a smaller dc neighborhood, it’s perfectly reasonable given all that.

If you like individualized, pampered attention…oh and great food, lol, then this is the place for you! I LOVE Masala Story. If I lived in the Brookland/CUA area, then this would be my “Cheers” because I’d frequent it often…first the environment is so cozy and inviting. (Someone was eating and chilling on their laptop when we were there). The staff is amazing. This time Kushmal attended to us, very professional and courteous; if I had to sum up the vibe here I’d say: the feel of fine dining, wrapped in a casual meal with an old friend. Simply because the atmosphere is very cozy, but you’re treated with respect and care.

Ok so now let’s talk about the food. I ordered the Lamb Keema Samosas which were delicious. The lamb was seasoned great and the dough was fried perfectly. My only wish was that they were larger. These were the smallest samosas I’ve eaten and it was $9.50 for the pair, which I think was too expensive for what you receive. I also ordered the Punjabi chicken: curried bone-in chicken with rice and chickpeas…also delish! There was a bit too much of one spice though. It was seedy, like Cardamom maybe, every three or four bites into the rice and I would bite one…it kinda overpowers your taste buds until you scoop in something else, lol. Not a deal breaker for me so I could easily get past it….it also comes with an optional spicy sauce ($.50) which was really spicy so I’ll skip next time. I got a creamy and fruity Mango Lassi to wash it all down and it instantly cools your mouth after a few sips.

Let’s break down the cost and make this more affordable (so we can go here more often)…my Husband ordered the Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Curry and a Mango Lassi. We paid $72 total, which leaves us at $36 per person. At this rate, we’d be broke eating here regularly…but the food/environment is amazing, so let’s work this out.

We both had leftovers so, next time, if we wanted to spend less, we could choose between skipping the samosas and ordering one meal each… or getting two samosas and sharing one meal. Either way will save us $20 and still have us stuffed walking out. We could also opt for water and save another $10, bringing us down to $20 per/person by not purchasing the Mango Lassi.

Overall, I’m in love with Masala Story and am looking forward to my next visit. They have a full bar, tables to accommodate large parties and a cool outdoor eating area. It was raining when I checked it out. If it was warmer, you could eat outside even in the rain. You won’t be disappointed or unsatisfied eating here!

They have another location in Downtown DC called the Goat Room. Kushmal said that they have a nice clay oven there and makes excellent kabobs!!!…my Hubbie and I love Chicken Kabobs so we’ll definitely be stopping by one day.

The customer service is very warm and welcoming. The portion sizes are not consistent. I ordered Curry Lamb, I was given a lot of rice with 3 tablespoons of chick peas and there was only four pieces of Lamb included in the curry. I am so disappointed, paying $30 for each entree there should be more. I will not be patronizing this business, I’ve spent enough on these small portions. No pics were taken because I rushed over to pick up my lunch and eat.

Good food at reasonable prices. I would recommend vindaloo (chicken/shrimp) and goat biryani if you are looking for non veg items, shrimp vindaloo was spicy. Thali is a great option if you are open to tasting more than 2-3 curries. The staff was friendly, restrooms were clean. However because of my personal bias, i didn’t like food serving style in a to go box. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting DC.
