Barbecue restaurants are omnipresent in many areas of the Southeastern U.S. Some are chains; some are new and modern; some are old but have a unique charm.

Mary’s Pit BBQ is not a chain. It looks much like it probably did when it opened 63 years ago. It is like stepping back in time.

It is in a rural area outside of Huntsville, Alabama. It appears to be in Ryland, Alabama but the GPS says it is in Gurley, Alabama. There is a big sign in front of the building that is hard to miss. The road is two lanes without a lot of traffic.

Admittedly, I favor BBQ restaurants with an ambiance like this one.

The parking lot is not marked but just a gravel space around the building. People park where they can.

It is informal. The menu is on chalkboards. A customer places an order and waits for it to come up. There are a few wooden stools in the area for eating or there are picnic tables outside. Many customers eat in their car or take it home.

The pork BBQ is not expensive. I ordered a side of banana pudding and a diet Dr. Pepper to go with it. My dining companion had a 1/2 pound of BBQ and iced tea with peanut butter pudding. The entire bill with tax was about $18.00

Service is friendly and customers that come in speak to others with a smile and an open willingness to speak.

Dining under the large trees surrounding the property on a sunny, warm day is a delight. When eating my sandwich, there were numerous birds chirping away in the huge trees.

When in the area, employ your GPS and take a drive to Mary’s for a real BBQ pork plate or sandwich.

Food always good! So good that this last time my potato was hard, undercooked, and nasty, I still wasn’t mad. Because 95% of the time that isn’t the case. Been going to Mary’s for years. Never a problem, never unsatisfied until this last time but like I said that’s not normal. I’ll still go back for more but hopefully this was the last hard, undercooked, nasty potato I ever get!

Excellent BBQ. My personal favorite and regular order is:
2 Mayo Slaw Dogs
Lg. BBQ Pork Sandwich
And BBQ chips. Yummy! They have the standard sweet or hot BBQ sauces, as well as the white sauce. They have a couple of picnic tables under a tree for outdoor eating. Indoor eating is confined to about four or 5 floor mounted barstools. Dining-in and waiting on your order can get hot around the July months. I have broke a sweat waiting on the food, but it is always worth it to me. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Parking is a small gravel parking lot out front. Note: I realize BBQ taste is subjective. The ribs tend to be too salty for my taste, yet loved by many.

The location is great for people living near the Maysville Four-way Stop and just down the road from Cooper Estates and Maysville Estates (two beautiful and safe neighborhoods), Give it a try! And if you mention ‘Ray’ sent you …

Saw a story on my phone about Mary’s and had to try didn’t disappoint. Sandwiches are big, and for the bigger appetite the have large size ones. Also the chili dogs are an old school treat.

I have more than a passing bit of interest in BBQ. Since moving to Huntsville, the BBQ restaurant experience has been underwhelming at best. I’ve heard of Mary’s Pit BBQ on local social media but haven’t taken the back road adventure time to try and find it. My wife and I were out today looking for yard sales and I saw this place pop up on GPS right around noon and I knew it was a sign. Of course we stopped! I knew it was about to get real real when I saw the screen door. I ordered a large pork sandwich “all the way” which included what seemed like two entire shoulders worth of the most perfectly pulled pork I’ve ever seen, vinegar slaw, pickles, and hot BBQ sauce. There was just enough slaw and sauce to know it was there, but the star of this show was the meat. Not too smoky, tender, and taken off the pit at the exact temp window to produce that absolutely perfect pulled texture that is what I strive for with every cook I’ve ever done. After eating, I had to talk with the cook, and could immediately tell that she not only loves what she does, but she loves BBQ in a way that very few people I’ve ever met do. She even gave us sample cups of their banana pudding and peanut butter pudding – I didn’t even know it was a thing, but it was delicious! No pics of the food, but if you’re ever in the Gurley area in the northeastern part of Madison County, Alabama and want some BBQ that will feed your soul as well as your body, you have to go to Mary’s Pit BBQ.

I had a hankering for Barbecue for lunch and thought of Mary’s pit barbecue. Google that and I was amazed the they were open on Sunday. I almost spilled my coffee running out the door. Got a 1/2 chicken plate with beans and potato salad and tried the peanut butter banana pudding for the 1st time . I believe I could have eaten more of that pudding it was so tasty

Just saw the news that Mary’s was damaged or destroyed in a fire and it’s devastating. Mary’s Pit is a whole experience, like a trip into your own favorite childhood memories. Truly magic. The food and flavors were icing on that cake.

I hope they can rebuild. I’ll be first in line to get my fix with all the fixins.

I know a thing or two about authentic ‘que and this is it! But today when I stopped in for lunch their credit card system was down and I didn’t have any cash. Do you know that they fed me and just said to pay them when I come back through? And I’m not even a regular! But I should be…

Mary’s is east of Huntsville so it’s a bit of an adventure getting there. It’s a classic bbq shack with few seats inside and picnic tables under a couple of shade trees. It’s fine looking at the signatures all over the walls and ceiling. The food was good but isn’t necessarily a destination for me. Nice pulled pork and excellent green beans, but about half of the sides weren’t available. We had a great time!
