Very good food and solid value for the price. I ordered both noodle and rice dishes. The udon was excellent, the broth was well prepared, and the noodles had great texture and quality. This is clearly where the restaurant shines.

The rice dishes were more average. In my experience, mixing the rice with sauce too early caused the rice to become overly soft and lose its texture. That said, it is still filling, and acceptable if you are very hungry, just not the highlight of the menu.

The side dishes were also quite good, and overall the flavors really brought back memories of Japan. If you are craving something comforting and Japanese-inspired, this is a great place to visit. I would strongly recommend focusing on the udon, which is where this restaurant truly excels.

the eats: tantan udon
an appreciation post for marugame udon for making tantan – i absolutely love the tantan. tantan is vegan, decently spicy, and honestly a comfort food at this point. i’ve tried this at least six times now and it hits every time. I will say I do like the san ramon (and sometimes berkeley’s) location a bit more than the san jose one, but it’s delicious regardless. I’m so full every time and the price is so worth it

When the lines aren’t long, Marugame is a great place to have dinner. After selecting a type of broth or curry, you get to choose tempura items, scallion, and tempura bits to put into your udon. Although slightly pricey, the portion size justifies it.

I got to try the creamy broth udon and tomatama curry broths – both were amazing. The creamy ramen broth was umami and flavorful. The chashu pork and boiled eggs complemented the savory broth well. The udon noodles were cooked to perfection and had great bounciness – they also retain the broth flavor well. I do recommend getting the extra spice ball to spice up the broth.

The tomatama curry was thick and extremely flavorful – the spices and tomato taste were amazing.

Super fast service getting the food, but my soup was not even hot. I prefer my udon soup hot, not just warmish especially on a cold night. It’s loud in there, so sometimes the workers can’t hear you — we had to tell them no beef (we don’t eat beef) and he was putting it in my bowl when I asked for the tofu bowl. Not his fault that it was loud.
Pumpkin was good, potato croquettes were oily. I won’t come back unless I am starving and there was no choice. Lol.

Fast casual Japanese food. Solid 4/5 on all counts. Great price point. Rice dishes are nostalgic comfort and makes you want to come back. Wish Yoshinoya could take notes. Near work so love coming here. Our go to place every couple of months.

First time trying any Marugame and I was very impressed. They make the noodles from scratch and you can witness the process through a window. You place your order, and they prepare your bowl in front of you, and then put add-ons as requested. We got the Tonkotsu, Teriyaki Chicken Katsu, Gyudon, and Nikutama. Really good tasting bowls.

The Marugame Udon here in San Ramon really excels with its broth served piping hot, unlike the other Bay Area locations that provide it warm.

Great experience and visit today. I was greeted and helped by Robert who was very polite, friendly and helpful. He provided an extraordinary experience and was very attentive to my order. When I ordered udon to go, I always want the udon not to be cooked which he politely helped me with, he made sure my order was exactly the way I wanted including the teriyaki rice I ordered as well. Robert was also the one who rang me up at the register but he was also the one making the udon, so he was doing 3 different jobs at one point. At the register he stopped to ask if I worked nearby such as Bishop Ranch which I said I do and showed him my employee badge. He then told me I get a discount and provided me one saying next time make sure you tell us you work there because you get a discount on your order.

I wasn’t expecting that and I come here atleast once a week after I get off work. This was the first time anyone working here has told me that. I told him it was going back to him as I always tip when I get take out there.

Robert is a fantastic employee! Hard working, very attentive to customers needs, helpful and attentive. He’s a great asset to Marugame Udon!

I’ve been here several times before, and the food and service have usually been good. However, on this particular visit, the experience was very different. When we walked up to the counter, we weren’t greeted at all not even a simple hello. While that alone wasn’t a major issue, things went downhill from there.

I asked the employee (Caucasian male blonde hair) if the $10 special included beef option. He whispered something to another coworker and began snickering, which made it very clear that he was talking about us. He then bluntly and loudly said no. Throughout the ordering process, he continued to show a noticeable attitude.

To make matters worse, the beef udon was terrible. It smelled off and tasted unpleasant, which was surprising given my past experiences here. I’m not sure if the chef has changed or if something else was going on that night, but the quality was unacceptable.

Because of this experience, I won’t be returning, and I would advise others to think twice before coming here as well.

Maybe I just had low expectations coming to this restaurant, but I was very pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to order and customize my beef bowl and how delicious it was. The flavors were amazing. The staff were very friendly and helpful in picking out my dish and helping me take care of the dirty dishes. This was a great dining experience.
